Aiken, SC - Shirley Hipp Bowers of Aiken, SC passed away October 9, 2022 at the age of 85.
She was born March 2nd, 1937 in Prosperity, SC. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Jacob Williams Bowers; her father Alvin Hipp; mother, Lucille Humphies Hipp as well her adopted mother who raised her, Betsy Hunter Hipp; step mother, Ruth Hipp; brothers Ray Hipp, Emory (Shirley) Hipp, George Hipp.; and brother in law, Bobbie Bowers.
She is survived by daughters Tammie (Donnie) Bates, Lisa (Cameron) Scott, Sherlyn (Noel) Chapman, Billie Lane (Joe) McCavitt; sisters Mable (Harold) Amick and Freida (Herb) Irish; grandchildren Ashlee (Nicholas) Young, Bethany (Joshua) Raines, Jacob Bishop (Melanie) Scott, Heath (Hope) Bates, Heather (Jacob) Ramsey, Trey (Shelby) Sloan, Hunter (Samantha) Scott, Kessler (Caitlin) Scott, Bradley (Kristen) Chapman, Emily (Landon) Stacy, Katie McCavitt, and Allie (Greg) Porter; 13 great grandchildren; sister in-laws Janice Hipp, Cheri Bowers, and Minnie Hipp; and her cat Dabo. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Shirley served as a founding member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Aiken, South Carolina for over 60 years where she sang in the choir. She was known by all as ‘Gran’. She retired from the Aiken County Public School District. Her priorities were God, family, and church. She also enjoyed gardening, multiple church circles and bible study groups, singing, Clemson football, beach vacations with family, and was an expert seamstress.
Services will be held Wednesday, October 12 at Trinity United Methodist Church of Aiken, SC at 11:00 am. Reverend Tyler Strange and Dr. Donnie Bates will officiate. Burial will follow at Zion United Methodist Church in Prosperity, SC at 3:00 pm. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be her son and grandson in-laws. The family will receive visitors before the service at 10:00 am at Trinity United Methodist Church.
