Shirley Ann Huggins, 90, of Red Bud, IL, formerly of Marissa, IL; born on June 20, 1935 in DuQuoin, IL, daughter of Norman and Sadie (née, Holman) Smith; passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
Shirley enjoyed cooking and visiting with her family. She was spry and always spoke about what was on her mind, never holding back what she thought. Shirley always saw potential in everyone and tried to bring the best out of them. Shirley was a bargain shopper, frequently visiting Dollar General for any deals she could find. She also enjoyed playing different games at the casino or gaming centers and going to BINGO night with her friends. Shirley was a lot of fun to be around and enjoyed doing things her way, which always put a smile on people's faces.
She is survived by four children – Cynthia (husband, Roger) Grefe of Red Bud, IL, Brent (wife, Johnna) Huggins of Freeburg, IL, Eric Huggins of Red Bud, IL, and Valerie Nephew of O'Fallon, IL; five grandchildren – Sara (husband, Brian) Candler, Stacey Stahl, Nick Huggins, Tory (fiancé, Clayton Richelman) Huggins, and Lucas Nephew; three great grandchildren – Reece Candler, Jack Candler, and Payten Hawthorne; daughter-in-law – Tammy Huggins; son-in-law – Scott Nephew; beloved grand dog – Cooper; Numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband – Nelson Huggins to whom she married in 1954; parents; granddaughter – Mandy Nephew; four brothers – Charles Smith, James Smith, Norman "Junior" Smith, and Jack Smith; four sisters – Aubra Selby, Crystella Barnett, Anna Birkner, and Ella "Josie" Wolfe; grandson-in-law – Don Stahl.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Marissa Township Community Building, 647 Mud Creek Road, Marissa, IL 62257.
Private graveside services will take place at Lenzburg Cemetery. There will be a Celebration of Life on Sunday, July 20, 2025 at the North County Country Club, 703 West Market Street, Red Bud, IL at 3:00 p.m.
