Simmons Stephen Spain, Sr., 96, of Lynchburg, Virginia passed away on November 27, 2024. He was the son of the late William Joseph Spain and Fannie Owens Spain and the husband of the late Lillie Gibson Spain.
He was born on January 31, 1928, in Charlotte, NC. He attended Cathedral Latin High School in Raleigh, NC, then obtained a bachelor’s degree in business from the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.
Prior to attending college, Steve enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and completed basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina. Several years later, upon graduating from the Citadel, Steve was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and served for several years on active duty.
He was a member of the Catholic Church and enjoyed playing tennis and golf, painting and spending time with his family. Steve spent his professional career as a certified financial planner until his retirement in the late 1990’s.
Steve is survived by his children, Simmons S. Spain, Jr., Kenneth B. Spain and his wife Nikki, and Cary D. Spain and his wife Kelly; grandchildren, Susan C. Spain and Gabriella D. Spain; and his sister, Marjorie Spain Cooper; along with many loving family members and friends.
A visitation will be held at Tharp Funeral Home on Monday, December 2, 2024 from 5:00-7:00 PM. A graveside service will be held at Virginia Memorial Park on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 2:00 PM.
