Sister Margaret (Peg) Jeanne Maloney, age 70, died on Thursday, January 2nd, 2025, surrounded by her family. Peg was a Sister of Mercy for nearly 49 years. She witnessed her parents dedicate much of their work and lives to the Sisters of Mercy through Mercy Hospital in Denver. She became a tireless advocate for the socially marginalized and was unabashed in her support of justice and equity for the poor. She was dedicated to living and teaching Jesuit values and most enjoyed teaching and providing spiritual guidance.
Peg is survived by her siblings: Michael (Becky) Maloney, Kathy (John) Maloney-Seaton, John (Debra) Maloney, Mary Pat (Phil) Waters, David Maloney (Chris Cardone), Liz (Bob) Snively, and Karen (Jason) Ryan. She was preceded in death by her father, John Maloney, her mother, Margaret Maloney, and her brother Jimmy. Peg truly adored her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews finding any way to spend precious time with them. She loved her family and was exceptionally devoted in her support of them. Peg’s fiery spirit will live on in the kids she so fiercely loved. She was Irish to the core, loved everything about Colorado and was a proud supporter of Colorado sports, most especially the Broncos. She had an outgoing and loving personality, pulling in everyone she encountered with her enthusiasm.
Peg spent many years working for the archdiocese in Denver and also served as an assistant to Archbishop Hanifen in Colorado Springs. She was a dedicated teacher and spent many years educating and working in mission and ministry at both Regis University and Creighton University. In 2018 she was elected to the leadership council with the Sisters of Mercy, in Omaha. Peg served on the board of several hospitals including Mercy Hospital in Durango and was currently sitting on the boards of St. Anthony’s and Longmont United. Most recently she worked with Sacred Heart Jesuit Retreat House providing spiritual direction and leading retreats. Retreat work and spiritual direction were specially loved ministries and through them, she touched many lives. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, Mercy Community and all who knew her light.
