Stanley Bowen, 84, of Waldorf, MD passed away on August 15, 2025, at Green Acres Nursing and Rehabilitation in La Plata, MD. Stanley was born on September 4, 1940, in Cook County, Chicago, Illinois, the oldest of seven children to Ethel (Green) and Stanley Cecil Bowen. His family relocated to the Washington D.C. area in 1950. In addition to his parents, Stanley is preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Florence (Gaines) Bowen, and siblings Lawrence Bowen, Joan Helen, and Margaret Bowen. Stanley is survived by siblings-Charles Bowen, Anita Scott, Kathleen Bowen; three children-Susan M. Conner (Michael), Linda D. Bennett, and Stanley William Bowen; 5 grandchildren-Justin Wines, Steven Davis, Mary Lynn Bowling, Jake Shelton, and Chad Bowen; 8 great-grandchildren; and nephew Kyle Bowen. Stanley loved baseball and was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan. One of his fondest memories was attending the 1945 World Series at Wrigley Field at the age of 5 where his beloved Chicago Cubs would win the World Series. Stanley's love of the game continued throughout his life playing baseball and slow pitch softball as a catcher. Stanley graduated from Oxon Hill High School in 1958 where he met his future wife. He was a loving husband, marrying his high school sweetheart Mary Gaines on November 25, 1960. As their marriage progressed, so did their family; quickly having three children born between 1962 and 1965! In addition to their children, Stanley and Mary shared a special song, their song, It's All In The Game by Tommy Edwards circa 1958. Stanley spent a lot of time with his children riding bikes, playing in the snow, and playing kickball with the neighborhood kids. His children accompanied him to softball tournaments up and down the East coast. Highlights included the Showcase Tournament with the Wilson Powell team winning the 1972 Class A Championship, and the West-Chester PA Tournament with the Dave Pyles Pontiac team placing 3rd in the 1975 Cosca Regional "A" League. Stanley was the 1974 M.V.P. with the Charles/St. Mary's Baseball League. In his later years, Stanley continued his love for the game as a member of the Northern Virginia Seniors Softballers Saints & Sinners 50+ team from 1990 through 1995, going to Houston, TX to play in the 5th Annual Seniors Softball World Series in 1993. Baseball and softball were not Stanley's only interests. In the 1970's, Stanley was the Team President of Smallwood Village Swim and he was a co-founder of the St. Charles Bears Football League in 1973. As a devoted father and grandfather, when Stanley wasn't coaching his children and grandchildren in baseball, softball, football, soccer, basketball, swim meets, dance recitals, and cheerleading, he was in the stands cheering them on. Stanley was an Aeronautical Engraver for the United States Department of Commerce NOAA, retiring in 1990 after 25 years of service. He then went on to work for OMNI Agency as a Security Officer admitting and escorting top officials into special operations SCIFFs, retiring in 2015 after 25 years. All services will be private.
