Stan was born July 29, 1951, in Alliance, NE, to Frank Gust and Edna Irene (Shaw) Peterson, but moved between there and Colorado with his family and then served four years in the Coast Guard from 1970-1974. Stan then settled back in Alliance as he preferred Nebraska life rather than Colorado. This is where he met his wife, Kim (Kleinschmidt) Peterson while working on the Peterson Brothers Ranch. They married on June 30, 1979, in Sutton, NE, at the Federated Church. In 1982, Stan and Kim moved from Alliance and settled back in Kim's hometown of Grafton, eventually moving to the family farm in 1999. They raised four sons: David, Will, Jeremiah, and Klinton who all remain local.
Stan had a strong love for his family – if something was happening to a family member, then it was his business. He always wanted to know where family members were and especially where or what the grandkids were doing. One of his greatest joys in life was being a grandfather to 10 grandchildren, and he lovingly was known as Grandpa Pete and Gpops.
Stan was known for his frequent phone calls and stops about town, harassing his friends in jest. Stan also enjoyed yard work and was known to have immaculate flower beds. He was a truck driver for over 45 years, the last 27 years driving for Torsen before retiring in 2019, logging over 4 million miles in his career.
His life's journey was complicated by a long battle with carcinoid cancer. Stan was diagnosed with his cancer in March of 2001, and he persevered through many treatments and surgeries, including a multi-organ transplant in December of 2015.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kim of Grafton; sons, David (Krista) Peterson of Grafton; Will (Heather) Peterson of Sutton; Jeremiah (Amber) Peterson of Grafton; and Klinton Peterson of Grafton; 10 grandchildren, Tiana (Shane) Peterson Keslar; Tanner (Nataleagh) Peterson; Tori Peterson; Colby (Chloe) Peterson; Cason and Canon Peterson; and Breckyn, Kyler, Rory, and Witten Peterson. He is also survived by his older brother, Ed (Mary) Peterson of Fort Collins, CO; his mother-in-law, Donna Kleinschmidt; as well as numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Edna Peterson; his younger sister, Marian Campbell; and his father-in-law, Kay Kleinschmidt.
