It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Steven Lee Johnston, known fondly as Steve to his friends and family, who left us on October 1, 2025, at the age of 68. Born on June 11th, 1957, in Marinette.
Steve, was the beloved son of the late Leo and Evelyn (Lewitsky) Johnston. A proud graduate of Peshtigo High School, Steve furthered his education at Northeast Technical College in Marinette, where he earned his welding certificate-an accomplishment that would mark the beginning of his desired career. For 37 years, Steve took great pride in his welding craftsmanship which was evident in the construction and major repair work of numerous ships at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
Steve loved Door County, embracing the vibrant life of Sturgeon Bay with open arms. He thrived in the midst of the town's bustling festivals, art shows and parks. He could often be found browsing the many small businesses and unique shops scattered throughout the community in search of special treasures.
Steve had an insatiable appetite for reading, often getting lost in the pages of history books, sci-fi thrillers, and mysterious tales. His passion for knowledge was matched only by his love for all animals, especially cats, who brought him immense joy and companionship during his younger years. He always enjoyed reminiscing and catching up during visits with Val and Debbie.
A true creator at heart, Steve expressed his creativity through various mediums, including acrylic painting, woodworking, and, naturally, welding. His artworks reflected his imaginative mind and skilled hands, adding beauty and uniqueness to the world around him.
Though Steve's passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, his legacy will live on through the ships sailing the great waters, his artistic creations, and the memories cherished by all who knew him.
Steve's family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire staff of North Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Manitowoc for their care, compassion and support.
As per Steve's wishes no formal services will be held. Berth & Rosenthal is serving the family.
