Susan M. Cartwright, 78, passed away Tuesday morning, January 18, 2022, at Westminster Village.
She was born December 12, 1943, in Indianapolis, the daughter of Earl and Anna (Peterson) Merrick. Susan graduated from Warren Central High School and Indiana Central (University of Indianapolis) with a Mathematics and Physics Education Degree.
Susan began her career teaching at Warren Central High School. She married the Reverend David Cartwright, associate pastor, Eastgate Christian Church, Indianapolis, by Rev. Boyd Hughes on November 22, 1967. Shortly after, David served at Arlington Heights Christian Church, Indianapolis where Susan taught at Tech High School. When David was called to Wabash Christian Church in Wabash, IN, Susan taught at Southfield and Northfield schools while obtaining her master's degree from Indiana University Purdue University-Ft. Wayne. She and her husband eventually moved to the Muncie area and to Hazelwood Christian Church. In Muncie, Susan taught Math and Physics at Yorktown High School and was Academic Skill Bowl Coach for twenty years (Coach of the Year four times), retiring in 2005. After retiring, Susan continued to teach at Ivy Tech for twelve more years, where she was named Adjunct Teacher of the Year.
Mrs. Cartwright was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Beta Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society for Teachers, and the Who's Who in Education. She was active in church choirs and bell choirs. She helped wherever she could at church, with anything from running the dishwasher, to putting together PowerPoints for services, to leading the Hazelwood college class, to acting as the wedding rehearsal coordinator for all of David's weddings. Susan served one term on the General Board for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She also served one term as the chair of the Constitution Revision Committee, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Indiana.
Susan was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt. She loved family get-togethers and looked forward to all the family celebrations. Susan enjoyed working puzzles and playing cards. She was an avid Colts and Pacers fan. She also enjoyed Ballroom Dancing with her husband David for many years. She found joy in acting and directing plays. Susan loved traveling with her husband to all 50 states (except South Dakota and Vermont) and toured Europe four times including the Journeys of Paul Tour to Greece and Turkey.
Susan is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. David Cartwright; two children, Christopher (Annelisa) Cartwright, and Megan (Thomas) Griffey; three grandchildren, Maxwell Griffey, Kathryn Griffey, and Alina Griffey.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her infant daughter, Amanda Kay Cartwright.
A Memorial and Celebration of Life service will be held at Hazelwood Christian Church on Saturday, January 29 at 3:00pm with calling at 2:00pm prior to the service. The service will be conducted by Rev. Pamela Pettyjohn and Rev. Diane Zehr. Masks and vaccinations (if eligible) are required to attend the visitation and service in person per the family's request. The service will also be live streamed on Hazelwood's Facebook page.
