Teresa Marie Mayo
September 27, 1959 – June 28, 2025
With hearts heavy yet grateful for the blessing of her life, we celebrate the luminous spirit of Teresa Marie Mayo-beloved mother, devoted grandmother, treasured sister, steadfast friend, and compassionate nurse. A woman of fierce heart, boundless sentiment, and unshakable resolve, Teresa left a mark on the world that will linger like the fragrance of wildflowers after a spring rain-gentle, enduring, and unforgettable.
Teresa was born on September 27, 1959, in Richmond, Texas, the cherished daughter of Calvin Eugene Hunter and Lola Jean McCamey-Hunter. From the very beginning, her soul radiated warmth, passion, and a quiet strength that would become the hallmark of her life. Her early years were shaped in the small town of Springtown, Texas, where she grew up in a home surrounded by the rugged love of two older brothers and the grounding presence of her father. When her mother left for California during Teresa's tender teenage years, it was her unwavering love for her father that tethered her to home. She chose to stay by his side, fiercely loyal and ever the "daddy's girl."
That loyalty would become a defining trait of Teresa's heart. She was a woman who took everything to heart-deeply feeling, deeply loving, deeply present. Life shaped her with its trials and triumphs, and she rose to meet them with grit and grace. Raised in a home where discipline met devotion, Teresa learned to be tough when she had to, yet her spirit always leaned toward tenderness.
She was the keeper of memories-sentimental to her core. Teresa found joy in the tiniest things that others might overlook: family trinkets, faded photographs, handwritten notes. She captured and preserved thousands of photos, not simply for the sake of nostalgia, but as a way of freezing love in time. Her soul was woven from the threads of remembrance, and her reverence for the past made her a natural genealogist. Through online family history networks, she reached across the globe, piecing together connections and strengthening the bonds of her far-reaching kin.
Her life's journey led her to Roesser Park, nestled near the serene waters of Eagle Mountain Lake, where she met the father of her children. Though their paths eventually diverged in 2005, Teresa's story did not stop there. In the quiet days that followed, she found comfort, companionship, and deep affection in the presence of Larry Dowdy, a trusted family friend whose soul resonated with hers. Their meeting at the home on Keeter Road began a partnership of shared laughter, enduring love, and mutual care. Their bond was unwavering until Larry's passing on November 22, 2022-a loss Teresa felt profoundly.
A woman of vision and determination, Teresa returned to school in adulthood, earning her associate degree and proudly becoming a registered nurse. It was more than a career-it was a calling. Her hands were healing hands, her heart open to the broken and weary. She didn't just care for her patients; she cared about them. Her compassionate nature, ever rooted in her love for humanity, made her a light in the darkest of places. Nursing wasn't just something she did-it was a reflection of who she was.
Above all else, Teresa's greatest devotion was to her children. She mothered with unconditional love, endless support, and the kind of fierce protection that could only come from a woman forged in both hardship and hope. Her home was disciplined, yes-but it was also tender, safe, and full of care. She cooked, guided, cheered, and stood strong behind each of her children, never wavering in her love. They knew, without question, that no matter the storm, their mother would be their shelter.
She is survived by her beloved children: Daniel Mayo and his wife Charlotte, Adam Mayo and his wife Jasmine, and Dylan Mayo. She was the adoring grandmother of five precious grandchildren: Sabrina, Corbin, Brock, Bentley, and Armanii-each of whom brought her joy beyond measure. Her love will live on in their laughter, their dreams, and in every tender moment they carry forward.
Teresa was preceded in death by her dear parents-her mother, known later in life as Lola Johnson, and her father, Calvin Eugene Hunter-as well as her beloved brothers, Calvin Eugene Hunter, Jr. and Nathan Hunter. She was also preceded in death by her faithful companion, Larry Dowdy, whose spirit she surely now rejoins in the eternal beyond.
Though Teresa's earthly chapter has closed, her story continues-in the lives she touched, the family she cherished, the care she gave, and the memories she so lovingly preserved. Her strength, sentimentality, and selflessness are stitched into the very fabric of those who knew her. The legacy of her love is timeless.
We take comfort in knowing that she now walks among the stars, hand in hand with those who went before, watching over us with the same fierce love and gentleness that defined her days on this earth. Rest well, dearest Teresa. Your light will never fade.
A time of visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in the Azle Chapel on the grounds of Azleland Cemetery. Her funeral service will take place on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at 10:00 AM in the Azle Funeral Chapel, also on the grounds of Azleland Cemetery. Following the service, Teresa will be laid to rest in the serene embrace of Azleland Cemetery.
