Thomas J. (Buddy) Ort, 93, of Spring Lake Heights, NJ, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with dementia.
Born on June 14, 1931, in Bayonne, NJ, Tom proudly served his country as an Active Duty Medic in the United States Navy Medical Department from 1952 to 1954, earning recognition as a decorated veteran.
Following his military service, Tom embarked on a fulfilling 32-year career as a dedicated manager at Exxon Research and Engineering. His passions extended far beyond his profession, as he was an EMT, a talented charcoal portrait artist, and a proud member of the Esso (Exxon) Choristers. He loved skiing, fishing, and long-distance running, often volunteering at local running events.
Tom was a staunch environmental advocate. In 2002, he joined his wife and neighbors in successfully appealing to Governor James McGreevey to address environmental concerns affecting Black Creek/Wreck Pond.
Although known as a career bachelor, Tom found the love of his life, Geraldine (Gerry) Farrell, whom he married in 1990. From then on, he embraced his roles as a devoted husband, a beloved stepfather to Gerry's three children, and a cherished Pop-Pop to six grandchildren.
Tom's life was filled with simple joys, from watching professional boxing and treasuring his signed Sugar Ray Leonard gloves to indulging in chocolate chip cookies and ice cream. A devout Catholic, he was admired for his gift of gab, quick wit, sense of humor, and compassionate heart.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Gerry Farrell Ort; stepchildren Kathy Parry, Ray Farrell, and Glenn Farrell; and grandchildren Brian Parry, Emily Parella, Lily, Raymond, Brandon, and Zack Farrell. He is also survived by his sister, Pat Phillips, and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Ellen Ort, and his sister, Ellen Marie O'Day.
