Pauline (Tina) Barbour Anderson, born on January 27,1945, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Robert R. and Henrietta (Ramos) Anderson, passed away on June 30, 2025, surrounded by friends.
Tina's lineage is deeply intertwined with the musical arts. Her second cousin, Cole Porter, was a renowned lyricist, and her family has a longstanding tradition of organ builders, having constructed 13 pipe organs within the state of Virginia. Music was an integral part of her life.
A 1963 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, Tina pursued further education at The Catholic University of America, Rice University, Shenandoah Conservatory of Music, George Mason University, and had the privilege of performing a master class with Leonard Slatkin, a prominent member of the National Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, she completed postgraduate studies in music liturgy at Virginia Theological Seminary.
Tina's passion for music led her to become the founder and former Music Director of the McLean Youth Orchestra, Repertory Orchestra, and Chamber Ensembles. She also taught Applied Strings and Chamber Music at Northern Virginia Community College, while maintaining a thriving private studio in her home, where she specialized in violin, voice, and piano. Many of her students went on to pursue higher education at prestigious universities and conservatories, ultimately achieving careers as professional musicians and teachers.
Tina Anderson's musical accomplishments have been acknowledged through her recordings for the Williamsburg Collection and her founding role as a professional member of the Musikfest Players. Additionally, she served on the Board of the American Symphony Orchestra League. Notably, Ms. Anderson received the 2003-2004 Kennedy Center Award for the People-to-People Project, recognizing her dedication to organizing orchestra programs in Peru, Columbia, Haiti, and Honduras. She holds the Order of the Grand Croix from Germany and the British Order of the Knights of the Garter (K.G.K.B.). Furthermore, Ms. Anderson received the Master Teacher Award from the Potomac School and was appointed Virginia State String Chairman for the Virginia Federation of Music Clubs (VFMC). In October 2011, she was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement from Shenandoah University.
Ms. Anderson was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, International Music Fraternity.
She is survived by numerous cousins, friends, former students, and colleagues.
Services will be held at Grace Episcopal Church (3601 Russell Road Alexandria, VA, 22315) on Tuesday 7/29 1 PM. Interment will follow at a later date at Hollywood Cemetery (412 S.
