Violet Etta Adkins departed this life on Monday, June 30, 2025. She was born March 18, 1942, in Charles City County to the late Thomas Richard and Lattie Bell Crawley.
She confessed Christ at an early age and was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. However, she frequented Gilfield Baptist Church with her husband. She was educated in the Charles City County school system. On November 5,1960 she married John Adkins. She retired from the Department of Social Services in York County, where she worked as an eligibility supervisor. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, spending time with her grandchildren and helping others on a regular basis. She gave herself entirely in support of those around her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Richard, Silas, Cornelius, Saunders and Lorenzo Crawley; and sisters, Iris Crawley, Doray Hinnant and Ethel Taylor. Precious memories will be cherished by her loving family; devoted husband of 64 years, John; three children, Wanda Rainey, John Adkins, Jr., Jeanine Black (Maurice); four grandchildren, Travis Simmons, Desiree Adkins, Allen Black, and Jearice Black; four great-grandchildren, Ariana Hunter, Trinity Simmons, Johonna Holley, Heaven Simmons; sister, Vera Burrell; sisters-in-law, Agnes Crawley, Connie Crawley, JoAnne Crawley Bell (Warren), Francene Johnson (Herbert); goddaughters, Courtney Crawley and Jeana Bradby; one faithful and loving best friend, Macie Johnson; a devoted and caring niece, Camille Burrell; many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A special thanks to Sandra Brown, Francesca Leigh-Davis, and Mary Highsmith.
A funeral service will be held 12 Noon, Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at Gilfield Baptist Church, 6640 Church Lane, Charles City, VA. A reception of friends will be held Monday, July 7, 2025 from 5pm-7pm, at Vincent Funeral Home, Providence Forge, VA. Interment to follow services in the Gilfield Baptist Church cemetery.
