A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Virginia Zan Nill Swartz, passed away on January 10th, 2025 at her home in West Windsor, NJ after a long illness.
Born in McKeesport, PA in 1934, she was the daughter of Henry D. and Mildred B. Nill. She was the valedictorian of her graduating class at McKeesport High School, and then attended Bucknell University, where she graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, winning both English Prizes, in three years, completing her last two years in one so that she could marry her husband and lifelong love a year sooner.
While at Bucknell she met her husband, William Swartz, who survives her after 71 years together and 69 years of marriage. Both shared a love of knowledge and learning throughout their lives together. The couple lived in McKeesport and Upper St. Clair in Pennsylvania before coming to West Windsor in 1990.
Her greatest joy was being with family, her husband, her children Linda, Karen, and Robert Swartz, her daughter-in-law Jessica Seaton, and especially her grandson Michael Seaton.
Having spent her childhood living in the country and riding horses, she enjoyed nature, especially birds, as well as visiting historic gardens in the US and England. A lifelong lover of the English language and literature, Virginia inspired the same in each of the couple's children, while instilling the importance of proper grammar.
While living in the Pittsburgh area she served as an officer in a family business and also as a member of the League of Women Voters. She remained a life member of the McKeesport College Club and Phi Beta Kappa.
The family will welcome friends on Saturday, January 18th at The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home in Princeton, New Jersey beginning at 11 am, followed by a Memorial Service at noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Adolescent Depression Awareness Program. https://secure.jhu.edu/form/psych
