Wallace Wayne "Smokey" Brittle, Sr., 76, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2025, at his home. He was born in Richmond, Virginia, on May 27, 1949, to the late Wallace Freeman and Frances Branch Brittle.
Smokey graduated from Tidewater Academy in 1967 and went on to study agriculture at North Carolina State University. After earning his degree in 1969, he joined the Army Reserves and began a lifelong career in farming, a vocation he deeply loved and continued until his retirement.
In 1982, Smokey joined the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department. Over the next 43 years, he served faithfully in many roles, including Former Assistant Chief, and was a dedicated and respected member of the department.
Smokey met Sherri Richards at the Miller Ranch in 1979. They married in February 1990 and shared 35 years of love, laughter, and companionship. Their home was always filled with warmth-and many beloved dogs.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sherri; his son, Wallace Brittle, Jr., and wife Leslie; and their two children, Allison and Isaac. He is also survived by his sister, Becky Ringler, and her husband Terry; their daughter Sarah Walsh and her husband Jim and their children, Avery and Lucille; and son Chris Ringler and his wife Jenitza. Additional surviving family members include brother-in-law Bobby Richards and his wife Stacey; their children Drew Sledd and his wife Sharon, Reba Coleman and her husband John and their children Ashton, Amelia Rose, and Liam, and Casey Britt and her husband Joseph. He is also survived by brother-in-law Don Richards and his children Catherine Duncan and her wife Abbigail, Jenna Richards and her fiancé Nick Plutro, and Olivia Richards. Smokey also leaves behind numerous cherished family members and close friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on July 19, 2025, at the Wakefield Fire Department, Wakefield, Virginia.
