Wayne E Benner, age 61, of Martinsburg, WV, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 22, 2025.
Born March 20, 1964, in Martinsburg, WV, he was the son of the late Cletus E and Patricia A Thompson Benner.
He was a graduate of Hedgesville High School class of 1982. After graduating from Shepherd College with a BA in Education, he worked at various lumber businesses. In 1996, he decided to follow his heart and teach. He was in the Berkeley County School System for over 20 years first as a Special Education teacher and then as a Driver's Education teacher.
He left an indelible mark on generations of students, athletes, and the entire Hedgesville community while he was a Hedgesville High School freshman football coach for 10 years and a track coach for 14 years. He was a mentor and role model who taught far more than sports. His legacy is one of integrity, resilience, and perseverance. He coached with passion and cared deeply for each athlete who wore Hedgesville colors.
In his high school years, he enjoyed playing basketball, football, and running track. After college, he enjoyed playing in the industrial and church softball leagues. He always looked forward to the fall season as he was an avid hunter. He was an active member of the Greensburg Methodist Church in Martinsburg.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Amy Bohrer Benner, two sisters, Brenda Kaye Benner Rush (Jerry) of Fallston, MD and Linda Benner of Martinsburg, WV, nieces, Brittany Rush Grazia (Eric) and Callie Riggs, nephew, Justin Rush, two great-nieces, aunts, uncle, and cousins.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Greensburg Methodist Church, 2203 Greensburg Rd, Martinsburg, WV 25404. The family will receive friends from 10 AM – 12 Noon with the funeral service to follow at noon. Pastor Jennifer Sawyer and Lay Leader Karen Wood will be officiating the service.

Words can´t match my sorrow for losing Wayne. He was like a brother who helped me and my family so much. Gone too soon! Prayers and love to Amy and the Benner Family. I know you and Dad will guide the Rams to greatness in the future. Once a Ram always a Ram.
