Wendel Eugene "Gene" Coon was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Wendel passed away on July 3, 2025, at the age of 98, at The Hospice Home of Johnson County-The Bird House in Iowa City, Iowa. Wendel was born in Battle Creek, Iowa, one of 5 children of A.W. and Ophia Coon.
Growing up in Odebolt, IA and Des Moines, IA, he participated in many high school sports and athletics, setting the foundation for a lifetime of nutrition and good health. After graduating High School in 1945 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. After discharge from the Air Corps, he attended Iowa State University transferring to the University of Iowa in the fall of 1948, graduating Dental School with a D.D.S and B.A. in May of 1953. He purchased a dental practice in Estherville, IA in 1955, practicing dentistry until retiring in 1998 and moving to Iowa City. Being a private pilot, he loved to fly. He also loved skiing with his family, photography, playing bridge, tennis, and especially golf. Having been an avid golfer all his life, he was fortunate enough to score two Hole-in-One's! One being on a 335-yard par 4!
Gene married Lois Marian Gutz in 1952, and they had four children – Barbara, Jim, Jane, and Paul. He was very active in the Iowa Dental Association, ADA, NW IA DA, Estherville DA, Iowa Society of Children's Dentistry, Kiwanis, Toastmasters and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
He is survived by 3 of his children: Jim (TX), Jane (CO), Paul (WA), 4 grandchildren Sarah, Samuel, Bradley and Hayden, and 2 great-grandchildren Nolan and Peyton.
A private family burial service will be held at Cedar Memorial Cemetery in Cedar Rapids in August. Condolences may be left at www.cedarmemorial.com or sent to Jane Sheehan 3333 E. Bayaud Ave. Apt. 211B, Denver, Co 80209.
