Wesley Green Obituary

Services for Wesley Green will be held at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon, IA. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Tuesday, July 22. The funeral will be at 10 am on Wednesday, July 23.

Wesley passed on July 18, 2025, at Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, IA, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He recently celebrated his 80th birthday with several friends and family in attendance at the Promise City Community Center. He was overwhelmed and felt blessed by the number of people who took the time to help celebrate his birthday.

Wesley was born in Iowa at the Corydon Hospital on June 20, 1945, to Beryl Wesley Green and Izora Hollie (Bear) Green of Promise City. Wesley graduated from Seymour High School in 1963. He married Margaret Butler on October 25, 1964.

He began his railroad career shortly after graduation in Silvis, IL, at the Rock Island Railroad, where he worked as a switchman for several years before becoming a train engineer. During his railroad career, he also worked at the Iowa Interstate Railroad in Newton, IA, and the IC&E in Ottumwa, IA.

Wesley and Margaret moved back to the farm in Promise City, where Wesley became a Gentleman Farmer, raising a small herd of cattle. After retiring from the railroad, he became a board member of the Chariton Valley Electric Cooperative, where he served for twelve years. He also served as trustee for the Promise City Cemetery.

He loved farming and gave daily lessons in farming to his nephew, Mark McGee. He was an avid card player with his favorite card games being euchre and cribbage. He could usually be found in Seymour on Wednesday afternoon playing cribbage with his long-time friend, Kenny Banks, at the library. He won several card tournaments, including Seymour's Old Settlers cribbage tournament with a perfect score. Wesley and Margaret were regulars at the Promise City Community Center's Friday morning breakfast and attended church services at the New Providence Baptist Church in Confidence, IA.

Wesley is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert Green (Butch). He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Margaret Green; his daughters, Teresa (Scott) Evans of Cambridge, IL, Denise (Richard) Day of Port Byron, IL, and Susan (Brad) Brauman of Centerville, IA. Nine grandchildren, Amber Gallagher, Crey (Lillie) Gallagher, Joey Caccavale, Joshua Day, Ian (Shaina) Day, Haley (Kane) Bernal, Kirsten (Alex) Nowotny, Taylor (Kendall) Davis, Will Brauman, five great grandchildren, Isabella Gallagher, Blair Day, Lily Day, Jack Day, and Iva Davis. His sister, Martha Stufflebeam of Unionville, Iowa. Other survivors include several brothers and sisters-in-law, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.
