HAVRE DE GRACE, MD/CANISTEO: William "Bill" John Chase, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dedicated community member, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on April 27, 1939, in
Canisteo, NY, he spent many cherished years living in Havre de Grace, MD, where he not only raised his family but also made countless contributions to his community.
William, known affectionately as Bill, earned his Bachelor's Degree from Ithaca College, and dedicated his professional life to mathematics as a civil servant at the Ballistics Research Laboratory on Aberdeen Proving Ground. His passion for numbers was matched only by his commitment to serving others. As a prominent member and former president of the Havre de Grace Lions Club, Bill exemplified the spirit of service, always lending a helping hand to those in need.
An avid sports fan, Bill was a loyal supporter of the Orioles, Ravens, and Bills. He found joy in cheering for his teams, a passion that brought him together with family and friends. His enthusiasm extended beyond sports; he spent many rewarding years as a Little League coach, inspiring young athletes with his love for the game and the values of teamwork and perseverance.
In addition to his professional and community endeavors, Bill enjoyed ushering for the Aberdeen Ironbirds, where he relished the opportunity to connect with fellow fans and share his love of baseball. He was also an active volunteer tax-preparer for AARP, helping many navigate the complexities of tax season with patience and care. In his leisure time, Bill enjoyed playing basketball, traveling, and taking cruises with his beloved wife of 62 years, Sandy. He was also a life-long member of Havre de Grace United Methodist Church, serving the church in many ways.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife, Sandy Chase, and his two sons, Timothy William Chase (Carol) of Westminster, MD, and Douglas Holman Chase (Shirley) of Claxton, GA, who will carry on his legacy. He was a proud grandfather to Douglas Holman Chase, Jr., Christina Chase, Hannah Hastings (Tristan), Andrew "A.J. Chase (Abby), Nolan "Teddy" Chase (Danielle), and Benjamin Chase (Mary), and great-grandfather of Celia, Henry, August, Ida, Shelby, Miles, Waverley, Georgia, James, and Emma, each of whom brought immense joy to his life. Bill was preceded in death by his father Paul Chase, mother, Emma Chase, and brother Carl Chase. His love and guidance will be missed, but his spirit will remain a guiding light for his family.
Bill will be remembered for his kindness, dedication, and the love he shared generously with all. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion and resilience, heartily embraced by many whose lives he touched.
