Reverend William D Hines, "Bill" to those who knew him, was called Home on Tuesday, December 11th, 2024. He was preceded in death by parents William E. Hines and Martha Reaves Hines and his wife of 61 years, Kayre Griffin Hines. He is survived by his two brothers, Larry Hines (TN) and Frank Hines and wife Myrna (AZ) as well as three daughters and their families: Kayre Katherine (Kathie) Pierce and her husband, Rick Pierce, College Park, GA; Evelyn (Eve) Elizabeth Hines Hanie and her husband Michael Hanie, Sautee Nacoochee, GA; Gena Louise Hines Taylor, Cleveland, GA. He is also survived by five grandchildren, their spouses, and seven great grandchildren.
Bill grew up in rural Alabama. He worked as a "grease monkey," putting himself through school, and also served in the National Guard. In addition to earning a Doctorate in Ministry from Louisville, Kentucky, he had a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn. Bill's skills in design and construction can be found at the churches and homes where he devoted many years to pastoral ministry.
In his younger years, Bill raised birddogs and enjoyed bird hunting. A creative artist of sorts, Bill explored many hobbies during his life from gardening to beekeeping and creating beautiful pieces of stained glass with his wife Kayre. He had a special interest in woodworking, designing and building stunning pieces of furniture that are treasured by his family. He enjoyed many years of family camping in the pop-up camper that he built. He had a love for family and found great joy in the smiles and stories that visiting grandchildren and great grandchildren brought into his life.
Reverend Bill Hines was an ordained Presbyterian pastor, serving congregations and churches for 65 years. He began his ministry in Waynesboro, GA, moving to Forest Park, GA in 1967 where he served at Philadelphia Presbyterian church for 14 years. He later served Memorial Park Presbyterian in Gainesville, GA and First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, GA. He especially loved teaching and being involved in the music ministry at church. Many members of these churches continue to tell Bill's family what a significant impact he made on the churches and on them personally. He was a beloved father, dedicated grandfather and leader in the spiritual community long after he retired. His was a life well-lived, sharing Christ and His Love with those around him.
The celebration of life and interment will be held at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church 351 Morrow Road, Forest Park, GA 30290 on December 17, 2024 at 1:00p.m. with visitation to follow.
