Winston Delano Wooten of Ayden died July 8, 2025 at his home surrounded by family. Mr. Wooten was born on January 8, 1942 to John Henry and Sudie Cunningham Wooten who preceded him in death. He attended school in Ayden, graduating from Ayden High School in 1960. He married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Sutton in December 1963. They lived in New Bern, Greenville, Ayden, and Chocowinity during their 51-year marriage.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19th at 11 am at The Memorial Baptist Church. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.
Mr. Wooten was employed by Garner Wynne Manning and Johnson Supply wholesale suppliers and later worked at NAACO as a planner. He served in the Army Reserves from 1966 to 1972, achieving a rank of Supply Sergeant. He attended Ayden FWB Church for many years where he served in many capacities such as deacon and Chairman of the deacon board. Mr. Wooten was a member of The Memorial Baptist Church of Greenville where he continued to serve in the Food Pantry ministry until his health declined.
Mr. Wooten enjoyed visiting the mountains, beekeeping, fishing, hunting, gardening, raising quail, and listening to bluegrass music. He was always working on some type of project whether it was carving birds, or some other woodworking project or just "piddling" in his workshop. Most of all, he will be remembered for his love of God and family and his generosity to his neighbors and community.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Sandra Sutton Wooten, along with eight brothers Robert, Wayne, John, James, Carl, Norman, Williams, and Clifton, and five sisters Effie Wooten, Katherine Bright, Selma Rogers, Ruth Grayiel, and Mamie Smith Williams.
He is survived by his wife of eight years, Virginia Riggs Wooten, daughter Wendy W. Dunbar and husband Robbie, grandson Keith Winston Dunbar and wife Logan Caitlyn Webb, granddaughter Kylie Nicole Dunbar and fiance Josh Philip Gibbs, stepson Christopher Riggs and wife Trudy, stepdaughter Susan Persinger, step-grandsons Brad Persinger and wife Emily, Brent Riggs and wife Brittany, step-granddaughters Kelsey Johnson and husband John, and Allie Liston and husband Tim, two step-great-granddaughters Sadie Johnson and Monica Riggs, one sister, Margaret W. Oehrli, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution to The Memorial Baptist Church or the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center is suggested.
