SPRINGFIELD - Mary Frances Parsons, 75, of Mahomet, formerly of Springfield, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2025, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
She was born on her mother's birthday, Nov. 29, 1949, in Elgin. She was the daughter of James A. and Catherine F. Nieman Atkinson.
Mary graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelor's and master's degrees in education. She taught students with learning disabilities and later elementary classes in Columbia, Mo., Niantic and Springfield. She retired from teaching in June 2004.
Mary loved to travel and was always ready for new adventures. She was a talented painter, jewelry maker, avid gardener and volunteer docent at the Dana Thomas House in Springfield.
Mary is survived by her husband, Jerry Parsons of Mahomet; one son, James E. (Colleen M.) Long III of Mahomet; two grandsons, Ryan Jerald Long and Raymond James Long; two stepgrandchildren, Zach Holiday and Emma Holiday; and two brothers, John (Tris) Atkinson and James (Victoria) Atkinson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Patti Jo Atkinson and Kathy Atkinson Wingerter; and a brother, Gerald Atkinson.
Cremation rites were accorded. A memorial gathering will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy. A celebration of life ceremony will be held on Friday, Sept. 19, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Springfield Motor Boat Club, 17 Club Area Lane, Springfield.
