Anthony Baratta Obituary

Baratta, Sr. - Anthony, Dr., beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He had recently mourned the loss of his devoted wife of 65 years, Joan, who passed on May 1st. He is survived by his children, Anthony (Brenda), Dianne (Hervé), Mark (Joanne), and Laurie (Ira); and by his grandchildren, Vanessa, Juliana, Lucie, Ava Rose, Charley, and Jonathan. Born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, in 1929, Tony was the son of Carmela and Vincent Baratta, both of whom immigrated from southern Italy. At 14, Anthony began working in his father's pharmacy. He graduated from Fort Hamilton High School, in Brooklyn, and went on to attend pharmacy school at St. John's University. Tony then pursued a medical degree, graduating from the University of Padua School of Medicine, in Italy. After completing his medical residency in Queens, he became a respected family physician in Lindenhurst, providing care that was personal, hands-on, and deeply compassionate. He treated generations of families and was not only a healer, but a trusted friend in his community. Tony and Joan shared a deep love for the arts, gifts they passed on to their children. Their home was always open, alive with laughter and celebration, hosting weddings, graduations, clam bakes, and New Year's Eve parties. Many of the family's happiest memories were made on the Great South Bay. Tony was a master storyteller, able to conjure vivid scenes from his childhood with remarkable detail. He had a wonderful sense of humor and delighted in telling jokes, delivered with warmth and a twinkle in his eye. Tony authored his memoir, "Along the Way," encouraged by Joan, to preserve the extraordinary stories of his life. The book chronicles entertaining vignettes from his childhood, years in Padua, his medical practice, and his many adventures. Dr. Tony Baratta lived a life filled with purpose, humor, love, and learning. Beloved by all, his legacy lives on in the values he taught, the stories he told, and the family he so deeply cherished. Reposing at The Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons East Islip Funeral Home, 200 East Main Street (1/2 Mile West of the S.S. Parkway, Exit 45W). My son, daughter-in-law and I lived in the same Greenview apartments as Joan and Tony. They were lovely neighbors. I read Tony's book and I loved it. I still have it and I will cherish it. I loved reading it. I am happy that I got to be neighbors with Tony and Joan. Very very nice and special people. May they both Rest in Peace.

I remember when Tony had his first hole in one, and when he showed up at the 19th hole to celebrate, 'the hole had already closed' and I just happened to get the last beer for the day, to which I gave it to Tony so he could bring in his good fortune on the golf course and from then on, Tony and I always had a "special 'hole in one' relationship". FORE!!! Rest in Peace Tony. Mark WR Smith
