James Poro Obituary

PORO - James R., of East Islip, NY at the age of 90. Devoted husband of wife Susan P. Simmons. Loving father of Rick (Gaynelle) of Gloucester, VA. Loving grandfather of Morgan of Richmond, VA and Chad, and great-grandson Lennon of Virginia Beach. "Uncle Jim" will be remembered with love and smiles by his many nieces and nephews and Susan's brothers. Jim was the son of Jim and Katie Poro and his early years were spent with his sisters, Kay, Gloria and Betty, "the kids of South Bay Avenue". Jim graduated from Islip High School in 1953, attended Clarkson University and graduated from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. He served in the US Army and was stationed in Washington, DC. Jim worked as Branch Manager at Island State Bank in Islip Terrace for 15 years and later became Executive Vice President of Bank of Long Island, N.A. for 15 years. After retirement from his banking career, Jim enjoyed 27 years as an associate real estate broker â€" the last 15 years with Coach Realtors in East Islip â€" retiring in 2020. Cremation was private. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Islip where he was a member for more than 80 years. He served the church as an acolyte, in the boy's choir, as a vestry member and as Treasurer for 10 years. His service to the community included as president of the American Heart Association - Sunshine Division, President of the Rotary Club of Islip for 2 terms and Paul Harris Fellow, President of the East Islip Chamber of Commerce for 2 terms, and member of the Islip School Board and East Islip School Board.
