Raquel Chappotin Obituary

Pachas - Raquel Lorraine Gonzales Chappotin, of Freeport passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025. A proud Cuban American, born 1937, in Havana, Cuba, she dedicated her life to the arts and bilingual studies. Raquel began a teaching career at Lynbrook schools until she retired. Received her Masters degree from Hofstra and CW Post. Raquel was former president of the Long Island chapter of the American Association of teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, A past president of the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport, where she was an advocate for the arts and promoted hispanic culture in the community. Served as a vice president of the Hispanic American Women's club of Long Island, a member of the Merrick ALA Unit 1282, Northwest Civil Organization, Friends of Freeport Memorial Library, Freeport Historical Society. Served on the Freeport Landmarks Commission, Hofstra Alumni Association, Hofstra Eastabrook Award, was awarded Newsday Everyday Hero, Town of Hempstead Hispanic Heritage, and the State Division Life Time Achievement Award. A visitation will be held at Hungerford & Clark Funeral Home, 110 Pine St., Freeport, NY 11520, on Tuesday, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Burial will take place Wednesday, at Calverton National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American legion Auxiliary unit 1282, 160 Merrick Rd., Merrick, NY 11556.
