Dear Judy, Lindsay, and Family,
I was so saddened to hear of Daryl´s passing, and I want to share my deepest condolences with you.
From the moment I met him, he was a force-animated, passionate, and full of life. As a mentor during my early years of teaching, he offered not just guidance but the kind of spirited encouragement that lifted everyone around him. His energy was contagious, his stories unforgettable, and his belief in both students and colleagues unwavering.
One of the things I´ll never forget is how, every year on my birthday, he would leave a doughnut sitting on my desk before I arrived. No note, no explanation-just a perfectly placed treat that always made me feel seen and remembered. It was a small gesture, but it said everything about who he was: thoughtful, generous, and never too busy to brighten someone´s day.
He often spoke with such pride and affection about you, Judy and Lindsay. Whether he was sharing a story or just mentioning something in passing, it was always clear how deeply he loved you both. You were truly the center of his world.
And of course, there was his loyal Cubs fandom-hopeful, good-humored, and always delivered with a story or a laugh.
Even now, I still find myself thinking of him when I teach-his voice, his example, or something he once said. He had a real influence on how I approach this work, and I´m grateful for everything he shared with me.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Carolynn Abruzzo (Wegesin)
