SAMI HASHIM Obituary

HASHIM--Dr. Sami A., 95, of Dobbs Ferry, NY, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025. Dr. Hashim was born just south of Beirut, Lebanon, and began his academic career at the American University of Beirut. He earned his medical degree from the University of Buffalo in 1955 and completed his clinical training at Harvard's Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. A lifelong researcher and physician, Dr. Hashim served as Director of the Division of Metabolism and Nutrition at St. Luke's Hospital in New York and held long-standing affiliations with Mount Sinai. He was internationally recognized for his pioneering work in lipid metabolism and clinical nutrition. Dr. Hashim co-developed Cholestyramine, the first FDA-approved cholesterol-lowering drug, and helped introduce medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) into medical use. His later research explored new treatments for neurological conditions, including migraines and brain injuries. Dr. Hashim is survived by his children, Susan and Paul (Mary Lynn), and his beloved grandchildren: Lilah, Noah (Brittany), Nicholas, Olivia, and Anthony. He was predeceased by his wife Kathleen and son-in-law Steve. He will be remembered for his intellectual brilliance, unwavering optimism, zest for life, and captivating storytelling. A viewing will be held from 4pm to 8pm on Thursday, June 26, 2025 at Edwards- Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry.
