The Section V and Allegany County Soccer Fraternities lost one of its legends this past week with the passing of Belfast coach Rich Sullivan. He was 74 years old and had been battling issues with cancer and stroke for several years.
A Section V and Allegany County Hall of Famer, his storied career spans 4 decades. He won 8 Section V Class D Championships and advanced to the NYS semi-finals 3 times. His 35 years of coaching places him #20 in NYS, # 7 in Section V, and #1 in Allegany County in longevity. His 453 career wins places him #20 in NYS, #8 in Section V, and #2 in Allegany County. He had a 73.54 career win percentage. Additionally, he was recognized several times as the Olean Times Herald Doug Burke Coach of the Year for Big 30 Soccer, and several times as the Paul Vienna Allegany County Coach of the Year for all sports.
It´s safe to say that he shaped and WAS Belfast Soccer, though he always humbly credited his coach at Belfast Paul Vienna as his inspiration. Fittingly, his son Mark has capably filled his father´s shoes and carries on the his father´s legacy of excellence. Hundreds of Belfast boys were ushered into his tradition of unwavering toughness, fitness, and grit that propelled them, often against overwhelming odds, to victory after victory and championship after championship.
Having spent the majority of my career trying to keep up with the magnitude of his success, I can say without doubt that Rich Sullivan taught me more than any other coach I´ve known about building team culture and fortitude. I will forever consider it one of the greatest motivators and privileges of my career to compete against Rich´s Belfast teams throughout a span of three decades. I´m proud to say that despite the ferocious rivalry between Belfast and Fillmore, I count Rich Sullivan as my friend. The last time I saw him we shared a pallet of Halloween pumpkins that we purchased together at one of his favorite retirement haunts, the Amish produce auction in Centerville.
Allegany County and Section V Soccer will be forever different and better because of Rich Sullivan´s influence. What better thing could be said about a coach than that? "Well done, good and faithful servant."
Respectfully,
Jamie Mullen
