Joyce Powell Obituary

Joyce Robin Powell
March 9, 1954 - June 6, 2025
Joyce Robin Powell passed away at her home in Carson City, Nevada on June 6, 2025. Family and friends surrounded and honored her in her final days and moments.
Joyce was born on March 9, 1954 in San Bernardino, California, later making her home and family in Northern California, in Santa Rosa. She earned a bachelor's degree in economics and was a brilliant business owner, investor, and money manager. Joyce was ever-generous with her time and wisdom, a great mother to everyone she met people and animals alike. She dedicated time to wildlife and bird rescues. Many shelter dogs became beloved companions in her care, along with a Macaw and her horses. She was a vocal and avid participant in the Democratic Party of Nevada, advocating for fairness and equity in policies and fighting for women's rights. Joyce's garden was her second home, where she found peace and made a home for many bees and butterflies.
Joyce was a gregarious soul, full of fire and compassion. Her balance was extraordinary, and her children held her in the highest regard: she was hard enough to fight for the ones she loved without any hesitance, yet soft enough to give you the warm coat off her back. Her compassion shines through in her daughter and son, the lights of her life. It is with heavy hearts that they carry forward her kindness and zeal.
Joyce is survived by her daughter, Liza, son Kyle, her daughter-in-law, Lisa, her four grandchildren Zane, Simon, Owen, and Nora, her loving partner Chris, and her sweet horse, Rocky. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a local animal charity.

Joyce was a wonderful human being and I am shocked and saddened to hear of her passing.

31 years ago Joyce wanted me to go with her to look at a bird.
Joyce: There is this bird that needs to me re-homed.
Me: I don't want a bird.
Joyce: Just come look at it.
An hour later, the bird was riding on my shoulder on the drive back home with its cage stowed in the back. I still have that bird "Mango" to this day. Joyce was supposed to take Mango if anything happened to me. Now it is up to Liza.
My deepest sympathy to Liza and Kyle. Joyce is irreplaceable -- Sandy Etchell
