George Mears Obituary

George W. Mears

George Walton Mears, Jr., affectionately known as George to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, in Palm Harbor, FL, at the age of 87. Born on July 22, 1937, in Atlantic City, NJ, George was a man of honor, integrity, and boundless enthusiasm for life. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication to family, service to his community, and a love for adventure.

After bravely serving in the Air Force military police K-9 Unit, George continued his commitment to public service with the Atlantic City Police Department. His remarkable 26-year tenure saw him rise through the ranks to become an Inspector. He was an integral part of the Motorcycle Unit, the Police Academy, and the K-9 Unit. He was the initiator of the first SWAT Team in Atlantic City and served as a respected Arms Instructor. His contributions to law enforcement were marked by a deep sense of duty and a passion for justice.

George's educational journey began at Hammonton High School and later at Atlantic Cape Community College, where he expanded his knowledge and skills to serve his country and community better. His education was not only a testament to his personal growth but also a foundation for the exemplary service he provided throughout his career.

Family was the cornerstone of George's life. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alice Mae Mears, who was his partner in all of life's adventures. He will be lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Linda Mears Ginabreda and Patricia Mears Morris. Linda and her husband, Sal Ginabreda, did everything they could to make sure George's final years with us were memorable. Sal and Linda took him into their home and will forever cherish the memories of their father's unwavering support and love. George's legacy will live on through his brother, Dennis Spier; his five grandchildren, Christopher, Alyssa, Matthew, Dylan, and Daniel; and his many great-grandchildren, Meadow, Archer, Camila, Grayson, and Juliette, who brought him immeasurable joy and pride.

In his retirement, George found great pleasure in the simple things in life. He treasured the family camping trips across the country from coast to coast. His passion for dog training reflected his patience and his deep connection with animals. Horseback riding was another of George's joys, offering him solace and a sense of freedom. Alongside his wife, George spent many happy days working at the Flea Market, sharing his love for conversation and community with those around him.

George will be remembered as a man who lived life fully and loved deeply. His passing, due to congestive heart failure, marks the end of an era, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him. His was a life well-lived, full of purpose and heart.

As we bid farewell to George Walton Mears, Jr., we celebrate the remarkable man he was and the enduring impact he has left on our hearts. His story is one of love, courage, and commitment, a narrative that will be retold with fondness and admiration by all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him. George's memory will be cherished, his lessons will be heeded, and his life will continue to be a guiding light for generations to come.

George's family will hold a private ceremony to honor his life and legacy. He will be laid to rest with the dignity and respect he so richly deserves, surrounded by the beauty of the place he called home. As the sun sets on a life so brightly lived, we take comfort in knowing that George Walton Mears, Jr. has found peace and reunion with his beloved Alice. May his journey onward be as fulfilling as the life he led among us.

A memorial service will be held in Palm Harbor, FL on Sunday, May 18, 2025 at 2 p.m. at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens to celebrate and remember George's life. A committal service will follow in Curlew Hills Cemetery, to bring George to his final place of rest.

May George rest in peace. He was a hard working cop that I worked under in the ACPD.

George, or Captain Mears back then, was in charge of the police academy at one time and I remember that he was tough on the recruits, but instilled a sense of pride, duty, and purpose to them all. A real professional. Rest in peace, George.

I had the honor of serving under your Dad at ACPD. He was a great leader and a good man. He was always strict but wickedly funny at the same time. I have great memories of him in my younger days. He and you will be in our prayers. Mike Erskine
