Joan Fraser Obituary

Joan Marie (Iversen) Fraser

February 12, 1931 - February 4, 2025

Joan Marie (Iversen) Fraser, of Cape May Point, passed peacefully on February 4, 2025, at the age of 93, surrounded by her loving family. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 67 years, Malcolm C. Fraser, Joan is survived by six children: Gordon Fraser (and Susan), David Fraser, Stephen Fraser, Janice Seer (and Kurt), Bruce Fraser and Andrew Fraser (and Dawn); eight grandchildren, Landon Fraser (and Neil), Anna Fraser (and Eric), Kurt Seer Jr., Trevor Seer, Erin Seer, Spencer Seer, John Fraser and Morgan Fraser (and Max); and great-grandchild, Amelia Joan Stevens.

Joan was born on February 12, 1931 to Axsel Willy Ifversen "Bill Iversen" and Antoinette Marie Ifversen "Nettie Iversen" (nee Sorensen) in Newark, N.J. Joan graduated from Nutley High School where she met her loving husband at a Rec Valentine's Day Dance. As Malcolm told the story, he saw her from across the room, asked her to dance and fell head over heels in love. She attended Hood College and earned a BA in Education and later earned a Master of Science in Education with a Specialty in Reading from Elmira College. While juggling the role of mom, Joan followed her passion and was Head Teacher for Head Start and later taught kindergarten and first grade at Holy Spirit in Houston, Texas. Also, Joan served on the Cape May Point Zoning Board and was a great sounding board and support to the successes of Malcolm Fraser during his 16 years as Mayor. Her Faith in God was strong. While she was always active in the church she attended wherever she lived, St Peter's By the Sea Episcopal Church in Cape May Point always held a special place in her heart beginning when she sang in the choir as a young girl and as an adult taught Sunday School and served as President of Women of St. Peter's By the Sea. While raising the family, Joan and Malcolm lived several different places due to Malcolm's work, living in El Paso, TX; Westfield, NJ; Painted Post, NY; Wassenaar, Netherlands; Houston, TX and retiring in Cape May Point. Joan began summering in Cape May Point when she was around 10 years old and never missed a summer there, even while living in the Netherlands. It's now up to the fifth generation in Joan's family experiencing the unique and special place that Cape May Point is. To know Joan was to love Joan. She will be missed by All.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit at Joan's viewing on Wednesday, February 12 (Joan's birthday), from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Spilker Funeral Home, 815 Washington St., Cape May, followed by a service at Church of the Advent, 612 Franklin St., Cape May, beginning at 11:30 a.m. with interment immediately following at Cold Spring Cemetery, Lower Twp. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested in Joan Fraser's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Condolences: spilkerfuneralhome.com

What a kind, classy lady! The world is a diminished place without the smile and cheerfulness of Joan. We always admired the team that was Malcolm and Joan and are glad that they are together again.
