John Hazelett Obituary

John Edward Hazelett, age 80, of Blue Grass, IA, died peacefully surrounded by family on October 27th, 2023 at Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, IA.

John was born September 4th, 1943 at Washington County Hospital in Washington, IA, the son of Albert John and Dolores (Hazen) Hazelett. He graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1961.

John was united in marriage to Gloria Jean Russell on November 20th, 1965, at St. Mathias Church in Muscatine, IA. Together they raised four children: Kris (John) Kay, Dena Hazelett, Travis (Kathy) Hazelett and Jeff (Cynthia) Hazelett.

John worked for J. I. Case in Bettendorf, IA for 17 years until he and Gloria purchased a hunting and fishing resort in Canada in 1977. Over the years, their business grew in part from the many repeat guests, some of whom became close friends. Many fond memories were made during the years spent in Canada operating the resort and raising their children. Upon selling the resort, they purchased cabins in Canada for their summer residence and wintered in a mountain home in Payson, AZ. In 2006, they returned to Blue Grass to live out their remaining years. In the latter part of his life, John worked security at Bally's Quad Cities Hotel & Casino in Rock Island, IL. He and Gloria attended Community Fellowship Church in Blue Grass.

John was an outdoorsman; enjoying hunting and fishing most of his life and teaching his sons to love the same. He loved to play cards and drive his yellow Corvette. Behind his tough and quick-witted exterior, he was a man who loved his wife and family more than anything.

John will continue to be loved and missed by his children and grandchildren: Alexis (Tracey) Addams, Chase (Jennifer Sierra) Kronfeld, Gabrielle Lee, Rebekah (Pete) Strommen, Lauren, T.J., Sophia, Anna, Austyn, Ashton, and Adam Hazelett; five great-grand children as well as his sister Linda (Marvin) Pool and many nieces and nephews.

John is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jack, and parents-in-law Gene and Alta Russell.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date. Condolences may be sent to Gloria Hazelett at PO Box 493, Blue Grass, IA 52726.
