Louis Cook Obituary

Louis "Lou" Wetzel Cook

February 3, 1926 - June 5, 2025

Lou Cook of Daleville, Va., 99, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 5, 2025, her son Steve's birthday.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, John William Cook (2013); two sons, Steven John Cook (2011) and David Louis Cook (2009); her parents, Peter Paul and Maude Padgett Wetzel; her siblings, Jean W. Falls, William P. Wetzel, and Betty W. Anderson.

She is survived by her daughters, Beverly Boyer (Bill) of Williamsburg, Va., Vicki Posner (Walt) of Seminole, Fla., and B.J. Branan (widow of Dennis) of Esmont, Va.; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lou was born February 3, 1926, in Waynesboro, Va., and graduated from Waynesboro High School. She married John on October 24, 1944, at the First Baptist Church in Durham, N.C., while he was at Duke University studying Electrical Engineering under the GI bill after his service in the Marines.

She followed John in his careers with Virginia Tractor and Carter Machinery, living in various places in Virginia, Waynesboro, Roanoke, and Bluefield, before returning to the Roanoke area and retiring there. They later moved to Fincastle, then to Bonsack, and spent their final years in the Glebe Retirement Community in Daleville.

In Bluefield, they were instrumental in starting Parkview Baptist Church, and in the Roanoke area they were very active members of Bonsack Baptist Church.

Lou enjoyed her travels with her husband (all 50 states and many foreign countries).

She was so involved in various volunteer activities that she received a Certificate of Recognition in the Eighth Annual Roanoke County Senior Citizens Hall of Fame (1993).

She loved music, singing in various groups and playing piano and organ for her own pleasure. She was famous for her hospitality. Most of all, she was a friend to many, greeting everyone with a warm smile.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Bonsack Baptist Church, with Dr. Robert G. Moore III officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Please come to the service wearing bright clothing, with a smile on your face, a song in your heart, and a story to share!

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Music Ministry of Bonsack Baptist Church, 4845 Cloverdale Road, Roanoke, VA 24019. Condolences may be shared with her family by visiting www.Oakeys.com.
