SUZANNE TIMBLE Obituary

SUZANNE, (ELLWOOD) TIMBLE
Suzanne died on May 8, 2025. Born July 30, 1945, in Elmhurst, Illinois, Suzanne grew up in River Forest, Illinois, and attended Oak Park River Forest High School. As an adult, she resided in Evanston, Winnetka, and, at the time of her death, Santa Fe. She is survived by her older brother, John (Bonnie) Timble, their children, and grandchildren.
Suzanne, self-described, had "more degrees than needed," having attained her B.A. from the University of Rochester, M.Ed. from Loyola University, and both Ph.D. and J.D. from Northwestern University. Although she had a degree in Psychology and no formal education courses, Suzanne taught 4th grade after her college graduation with a "provisional certificate"-and loved it.
She went on to use her Ph.D. designing and implementing the Master's in Learning Disabilities program at St. Xavier College (now University), and teaching graduate students in special education. She taught at the university level for nine years, the last three at DePaul University. The law became her next profession, which she also loved, practicing as an estate planning lawyer for more than 25 years.
Suzanne was active in many organizations-President of the University of Rochester River Campus Board, President of the Boards for Chicago Volunteer Legal Services and the Chicago Estate Planning Council. She was active on the zoning boards of Evanston (Chair) and Winnetka, and on the Board of the Winnetka Community House. She also served as president of the Winnetka/Northfield Rotary, and she loved to sing with Women of Note-or anyone else who would listen.
For more than 25 years, she was with her best friend and wonderful husband, Scott Ellwood, who predeceased her. After his death, she unexpectedly (for herself, her friends, and her family) bought a home in Santa Fe (the City Different and a Sanctuary City). She found that the serene environment-blue skies, clear air-suited her well. She made new friends and neighbors and enjoyed music, a very active Newcomers Group, cooking classes, museums, and more.
She served on the Boards of her Condominium Association, the Santa Fe Symphony, the Desert Chorale, and the Cancer Foundation for New Mexico, and became involved in her new church-Church of the Holy Faith. She joined the Clown Chorus, singing and entertaining at various care facilities for older and disabled individuals.
Tennis was her favorite sport-"play hard but have fun." Suzanne enjoyed golf too, always hoping to improve her game. Reading and travel, entertaining and cooking (recently "New Mexican"), and her amazing dog Max were also favorite pastimes.
Suzanne said:
"I have had a wonderful life, for which I am grateful. A nasty cancer invaded my life from out of nowhere. I guess cancer is always nasty, and regularly comes from out of nowhere. I did not smoke, nor did I roll in asbestos. This cancer was purportedly very rare, and very aggressive, and not responsive to surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy."
And so, she died.
She leaves love and hugs for all her friends and family. Interment private. No flowers, but contributions to the University of Rochester, the Cancer Foundation for New Mexico, or the Santa Fe Desert Chorale in her memory would be wonderful.

Suzanne and I served on the board of the Cancer Foundation for New Mexico for several years, and she was always a kind, calm, and intelligent voice of reason. When I was the Board Chair, I would frequently turn to her for counsel, and at the end of each conversation, whether on the phone or at breakfast at the Plaza Cafe, where she'd show up wearing the best hat in the building, she would say, "Keep doing good work." Even at the end, she remained steadfast in her encouragement, saying "Nice begets nice," and that "Some think nice is overused - I don't." Santa Fe was a better place for having her in it.

Thank you for sharing a lovely obituary. Although I played tennis with Suzanne years ago, I did not know how accomplished she was since she rarely spoke about herself. Her generosity to her community and to her friends will long be remembered. A kinder person I have yet to meet. She will surely be missed.
