John Dusay Obituary

Dr. John (Jack) M. Dusay
11/21/1935 - 04/27/2025
Dr. John M. Dusay M.D., or Jack Dusay as his friends and family knew him, 89, of San Francisco, passed away at home Sunday, April 27, 2025, with his wife Linda and family by his side.
Dr. Dusay was a distinguished American psychiatrist and professor at the University of California San Francisco Medical School. He was a leading figure in the San Francisco psychiatric community. In 1973, he received the prestigious Eric Berne Memorial Scientific Award in recognition of his development of the Egogram. His book on the subject, Egograms – How I See You and You See Me, has been hailed as a major breakthrough in psychology - a brilliant tool for identifying and balancing the Ego States. Dr. Dusay was a founding member of the International Transactional Analysis Association and its president (1974-1975). His innovative approach to understanding personality dynamics left a lasting legacy in all TA fields. His work continues to inspire practitioners and individuals worldwide in their exploration of human behavior and relational patterns. Jack was born in Topeka, and grew up in Russell, Kansas. He received his medical degree at The University of Kansas and then interned at New Rochelle Hospital in NY. He relocated to San Francisco in 1961 to serve his residency at UCSF Langley Porter.
Jack was drawn to California's 1960s nascent explosion of new and creative thought and became involved in the blossoming cultural scene of art, music and the explorations of the mind. He continued his practice until his death. He was exceptional at narrowing down his patient's issues into simple, clear terms, stating them with love and kindness and guiding them to use their best selves to heal and go forward to live productive and gratifying lives.
Jack was married three times. First to actress Marj Dusay, and then to psychologist Katherine D. Winter. Both marriages bore two children, but it was his third marriage, to Linda Holbrook, where he finally found the love of his life. They spent the last 30 years together living in their favorite city and traveling extensively – particularly to Japan. They both loved skiing, playing tennis, and were connoisseurs of fine wine. They entertained friends from all walks of life, and no one had a better time or laughed as much as Jack Dusay. His family, patients, colleagues and friends all miss him terribly. Jack was predeceased by his mother Dorthy Murray Moran, father Floyd Ernest Dusay and son Randall Dusay.
Jack is survived by his wife, Linda Holbrook, his elder daughter Debra Dusay Blocker, her husband David Blocker and their daughter Deena; his son Deren Dusay and his son Jaxon and daughter Laila; his daughter Alexandra Dusay, his stepdaughter Christina Giguere, her husband David Kvaratskhelia and their children Valentine, Luc, and Vivienne; and Stepdaughter Michelle Giguere and her children Troy, Carmen, and Derek. He is also survived by three great granddaughters Skyler, Zoe & Melanie.

Dr. Dusay helped me when I was at a low point in my life. He may have saved me. I will never forget him.

My condolences to the family of Dr John Dusay. I keep very warm memories from Jack Dusay , meting him several times: at a conference in Argentina for fist time, when he came to Mexico for conference, in San Francisco when I was president of ITAA and he invited me to a party at his beautiful house after a conference, and the last time in 2024 when he arrived by surprise visiting the Eric Berne Archives in San Francisco, organized by Carol Solomon. I continue teaching his egogram theory at my training groups and wll miss him a lot, always with lovely memories. Dr. Gloria Noriega Gayol

Jack was one of my first mentors at Langley Porter, along with David Kessler. Learned sooo much from his passion for TA. May those he loved find solace in his long life, filled with generations of family and may all of us whom he trained remember his effect on our early days in Psychiatry. They were pretty Fabuloussss

Jack Dusay was the first TA professional I met in person (April 2019) in the early days of my TA Journey. I signed up for a psychotherapy appointment with him and he quickly figured out I was not there for therapy but to meet him. We talked for 2 ½ hours. It was the beginning of a special friendship. I nudged him to attend a TA event at the UCSF Library´s Eric Berne Archives last October (2024). It was there I met his wife, Linda. It was truly inspirational to see how much they adored each other.

At the close of our first meeting Jack pushed me forward to meet others in the TA field. We kept in touch and often when I went to San Francisco I would bring him his favorite Salmon Cozy sandwich from Rose´s café. He would tell jokes, we would talk TA, and we both would enjoy a fabulous visit. He would always save half of his sandwich for Linda.

Jack was truly a rare one, full of kindness, understanding and compassion.

If you measure your life by the friends you have accumulated, a major highlight of my life is having Jack Dusay as a friend. Truly an honor and a blessing. Fare thee well Jack!
