Stephen Massey Obituary

Stephen Massey
12/04/1945 - 05/24/2025
Stephen McKeever Massey passed away at age 79 on May 24, 2025. Although he was born and raised in Kansas City, MO, he became a San Franciscan the day he arrived in 1975 with his soul mate and wife, Patricia Luna-Massey (Patti). We will miss his boundless energy and enthusiasm for life and San Francisco. "We love to play tourist in our own town." He loved world travel and produced amazing scripted trip agendas. Steve and Patti had fun adventures skiing around the world, boating, scuba diving and backpacking. He was passionate about trains and train travel. Steve had a lifelong commitment to urban living and was a tireless advocate for public transit.
Steve had an incredible memory for historical data, geography, and urban street grids, getting the nickname "atlas" by co-workers. He was known for his humor, affection, loyalty and optimism.
In his professional life, Steve was an honorable, creative and successful architect; also an excellent illustrator and designer. He enjoyed the role of architectural and travel mentor. Steve specialized in the renovation and adaptive reuse of commercial spaces. After working with other Kansas City and San Franciscan architects, he started his own firm, Massey Architects, in 1984.
Steve received his Architectural Degree in 1970 from the University of Kansas. He served 6 years in the National Guard. He is survived by his wife Patti, his brother Bruce and multiple cousins. He will be profoundly missed by family, friends and colleagues.

Dear Patti,

David and I are so very sorry for your loss. We will always remember him as a dear, dear friend. He was always up for an adventure, whether traveling abroad, throughout California, and most especially, all his favorite haunts in The City. I don't think any of my friends born and raised here could be a better San Franciscan than he was!

Fondly,
Kathy
