Ann Freeman Mead

December 28, 1934 - July 22, 2025

Ocean Springs, Mississippi - Ann Freeman Mead passed peacefully in her sleep in Ocean Springs, MS on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. She was a longtime resident of Ocean Springs, MS.

She was born in Meridian, MS to Thomas Jones Freeman and Louise Allen Freeman on December 28, 1934. She completed her undergraduate degree at Tulane and Armstrong college. She earned her nursing degree at the University of Georgia and then received her master's from LSU in New Orleans. She was the director of an assisted living facility in Georgia before going on to teach nursing in Mississippi. She was active in the Audubon Society, the episcopal church, and alcoholics anonymous. She married Alfred Mead on June 23, 1955.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Louise; her husband, Alfred; her daughter, Laura (David) Mead Herndon; and her grandson, William Christopher Newman.

She is survived by her sister, Helen; her daughter, Gretchen Mead (Steve) Newman; her grandchildren, Alfred Mead Herndon (Tiffany), Laura Ann Whitmire, John Richard Newman (Lauren), Ann Caroline Haniszewski (Nick) and Joseph Keller (Alicia) Herndon; and great grands, Herndon and Lila Whitmire, Jake, Lucy and Will Herndon, Gabe and Louise Haniszewski, Dexter and JD Herndon, and Idris Newman.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Audubon Society, the Nature Conservancy or the episcopal church.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at St. John's Episcopal Church, Ocean Springs, MS. Friends may visit one hour prior. A reception will follow the service at noon. She will be laid to eternal rest in the garden at St. John's alongside her husband, Alfred. Ann loved bright colors, LSU, and the Saints.
