Winnifred Martin Obituary

Winnifred "Marjorie" Major Martin passed away peacefully on November 11th at CC Young Memorial Home in Dallas, Texas. Marjorie was born on July 14th, 1922 in Akron, Ohio. She grew up in Glynn, Louisiana where she graduated from Poydras High School. She went on to obtain a degree in Home Economics from Louisiana State University in 1943. Upon graduation, she worked for 16 years as a lab technician at Copolymer Chemical. Once Marjorie married and had children, she stayed at home to raise her family. A devout Catholic, she became very involved at St. Agnes Catholic Church where she was well known and beloved. She served in the Altar Society as Treasurer and collection volunteer for decades. Her dedication was recognized with an award at the church's centennial celebration by Father Charbel. Her last few years she lived in Dallas near her daughter's family. She was active in her retirement community going to classes, activities and enjoying her Catholic group. Most of all, she enjoyed time with her grandchildren. Known as Margie to her siblings, Mama to her children and Grandma to the grandkids, she will be missed by all. Her kind, generous and comforting spirit will linger on in all those who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Martin; parents, Sydney Major and Hortense Schmalzrid Major; and brother Leland Major. She is survived by her daughter Maureen Hayter (Doug), son David Martin; sisters Marie Landry, Virginia Major and Grace Kleinman (Bill); grandchildren Evan and Max Hayter; nieces and nephews Randy (Marla) Kleinman, Louise Kleinman, Diana (Brad), Susan Kleinman, Father Jerry Martin, Lana (Jim)Dixon and Timothy (Cindy) Martin. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church at 749 East Boulevard, Baton Rouge at 11:00 am on November 28th preceded by visitation at 10:00 am and the Rosary at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Agnes Catholic Church.
