Richard Estes Obituary

Richard Estes M.D.

Richard "Dick" Cary Estes M.D., 89, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and formerly of Atlanta and Sea Island, died Jan. 2, 2025. He was born June 11, 1935 in Pittsburgh, to Artrue Holland and Ralph Cary Estes. After graduation from Georgia Military Academy (Woodward Academy), he attended Emory University where he graduated in 1957 with a B.S. in Biology and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. In 1961, he graduated with an M.D. degree from the Medical College of Georgia, where he was a member of Phi Chi medical fraternity. After completing a residency in General Surgery, he completed a Urology residency at Duke University Medical Center in 1966 where he served as chief resident. He then joined the staff at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1968, Dr. Estes joined Drs. Samuel Ambrose and Perrin Nicolson in the practice of Urology at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. Dr. Estes served as Chief of Urology for several years at Piedmont and developed the urodynamic lab there. During his career he published multiple papers in the Journal of Urology. He was forced to retire from practice in 1994 due to illness.

Dr. Estes was a member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta and St. Simons Presbyterian Church after moving to Sea Island. He was certified by the American Board of Urology; was a member of the American Medical Association; the American Urological Association; the Southeastern section of the American Urological Association; the Southern Medical Association; the Medical Association of Georgia; the Fulton County Medical Association; the Georgia Urological Association, where he served as Secretary/Treasurer from 1981-1984 and President from 1984-1985; and the Atlanta Urological Association, where he served as President from 1983-1984. Additionally, he was a founding member of the Sea Island Club and a former member of the Vinings Club, the Phoenix Society, the Rotary Club of Atlanta, the Atlanta Clinical Society and the Friday Forum Lunch Bunch on St. Simons Island.

After becoming disabled, Dr. Estes enjoyed home theater electronics with immersive sound systems where he maxed out the bass, and his wife frequently remarked, "Where is that thunder coming from? There is not a cloud in the sky."

Dr. Estes is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rebecca "Becky" Stroud Estes; daughters, Susanne Estes Saad (John) and Elisabeth Estes Lovett (Peter); grandchildren, Hannah, Davis and Drew Saad and Caroline and Will Lovett, all of Winston-Salem. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Ruth Estes Trager.
