Barbara Eckert Obituary

Barbara Ann (Schulte) Eckert

September 6, 1938 - October 27, 2025

Barbara Ann (Schulte) Eckert passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025, in Council Bluffs, at the age of 87.

She was born in Sac City, IA, to the late John and Louise (Gaskell) Schulte, on September 6, 1938.

Growing up in Sac City, she attended school there and graduated from Sac Community High School in 1956. Following high school, she attended St. Mary's College at Notre Dame and graduated from there with a BA degree in education, in 1960. She pursued her love of teaching and moved to Council Bluffs, where she taught at Roosevelt Elementary for over 40 years, and even continued to substitute for a few years after retirement. Her greatest joy was found in teaching children.

In 1971 she married Joseph Eckert. They were happily married, enjoying their time together, until his death in 1997.

Barbara was an active member of St. Peter's Church, and taught Religious Ed there for many years. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Iota teacher's sorority and was elected as state president for several years.

She was feisty, kind, an impactful educator, an animal lover, and hilariously quick-witted, with an infectious and unique sense of humor. She was generous to a fault. She influenced everyone she came into contact with and impacted their life in some meaningful way.

Her niece Gina and daughters Ari and Serina can attest to that. Whenever they needed a rescue, Baba was there. She never judged, never gave up on people, and shared a fond love of food with the girls. Their favorite place to eat was at Village Inn. Barb had such an impact on people, that even a waitress there was immediately tear stricken when she heard the news of her passing.

Left to cherish her memory, are her brothers, Mike (Anne) Schulte, of Carroll, IA, Charles Schulte, of Sac City, and Frank Schulte, of St. Paul, MN; her sisters, Mary Ann (Jeff) Bohnenkamp, of Spencer, IA, and Jane Domino, of Spencer, IA; 13 nieces and nephews, their spouses, and many great nieces and nephews, other family, friends, co-workers, and long time neighbors.

Rest in Peace, Barbara. You are safe and loved deeply, until we meet again.

Memorial service, Tuesday, 11 a.m., at Cutler O'Neill Funeral Home.
