PAGELAND, S.C. - Harriett M. Steele, 86, of Pageland, S.C. passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025 surrounded by her loving family.
Harriett was born on January 27, 1939 in Lancaster, South Carolina to the late Ellisie Morton and Beaulah Hunter Morton.
Her life was a testament to enduring love, as she shared 53 years with her husband, Tommy Steele of Pageland, S.C.
Harriett's nurturing spirit was evident in her role as a mother. Though predeceased by her daughter, Kim Hancock and son, Mike Hancock, and great-granddaughter, Haley White her love continued to flow through her family. She found joy in her role as a mother-in-law to Vickie Hancock of Lancaster, S.C., and as a doting grandmother to Lisa Thomas, Chuck Hancock, and Jaime White. Her legacy further blossomed with her great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Phillips and Cody White, who brought her immeasurable happiness. Family was the cornerstone of Harriett's world, and she was a beloved sister to Jean Price of Great Falls, S.C., and a cherished aunt to her nephew, Ray Douglas of Great Falls, S.C. Her family circle extended to include special friends JoAnne Lucas of Lancaster, S.C., Lisa Smith of Pageland, S.C. and Tawana Kirkley of Jefferson, S.C.
Harriett's interests reflected her zest for life and her love for the comforts of home. She was a meticulous housekeeper, whose home was a reflection of her love for decorating and creating a warm, inviting space for all who entered. Her hands were rarely still, as she raised beautiful schnauzers and enjoyed the simple pleasure of going for rides in her classic 1971 GMC blue truck. In her later years, Harriett faced the challenges of Dementia with remarkable grace and faith. Despite her illness, her spirit remained unbroken, and she continued to pray fervently, not just for herself but for others as well. Her compassion extended to her own mother, whom she cared for with unwavering dedication during her battle with Alzheimer's. Harriett's caregiver, Louise Sims, stood by her side, providing comfort and care that allowed her to spend her final days surrounded by love and familiarity. Her passing marks the end of an era, but her memory will continue to inspire and guide those who knew her.
