Nancy Frye Obituary

Nancy Pope Frye

January 6, 2025

Lexington, South Carolina - A celebration of life service was held on Thursday, January 9, 2025. Nancy "Pope" Frye passed this life on January 6, 2025. She was a lifetime resident of Lexington, and a member of St. David Lutheran Church, West Columbia, SC.

Pope was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, David E. Frye, Jr. They had two daughters, Amy Elizabeth Redd (Robin), Nancy Marlowe (Robbie); and a son, David E. Frye III. Her four grandchildren were very precious in her life, Matthew and Christopher Frye, and Rowan and Abbie Marlowe. She was affectionately called "Nana" and they had lots of fun playing games and just being together; leaving many memories of their times together. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Pam Steele, who resides in Lexington.

Pope completed her Bachelor of Science and Master's degrees in Elementary Education from the University of South Carolina, after graduating from LHS. She taught fifth and sixth grades in Lexington School Districts #5 and #1 for 31 years.

Pope felt very blessed to have the love and devotion of her aunt, the late Miss Marguerite Burnham Jenkins, who raised her. Pope was very close to her father, the late Ralph P. Steele. She was also the daughter of the late Mildred J. Steele. Pope had one brother who is now deceased, Pete Steele.

Pope enjoyed reading and listening to music. During earlier years when she was only 19, she was the assistant organist for Lexington Baptist church.

Pope requests that memorials be made in her name to ACHA (Adult Congenital Heart Association) 3300 Henry Avenue, Ste. 112, Philadelphia, PA 19129 or to St. David Lutheran Church.

I am saddened to see that Pope has passed away. Our mothers were very close and worked many years together. Pope and David entrusted me with babysitting three very sweet children. May David and her children be comforted by my favorite Bible verse. Roman's 8:18

Sweet memories of growing up with Pope and playing duets in piano recitals. Rest eternal grant her O Lord and may perpetual light shine upon her.
