George Rimler Obituary

George Warren Rimler

April 16, 1942 - June 4, 2025

George Warren Rimler was born April 16, 1942, in New York City and died on June 4, 2025, in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, surrounded by family and friends. In the intervening 83 years, he was the first in his family both to finish college and earn a Ph.D.; became a successful business professor; devoted 59 years to his beloved Anita; and instilled in his children and grandchildren a belief in hard work and education. He was ready to fight to defend his family and his values and he proudly never took crap from anyone.

George touched countless lives. As a teacher, father, and grandfather, he understood that the meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you may never sit.

Born to Moe and Ruth Rimler, a tailor/small business owner and homemaker, George grew up in Queens and graduated from Brooklyn Tech and Brooklyn Polytechnic College. Ahead of his time, he headed south to Atlanta, where he met the love of his life, Anita Fortune Amiel and started their family. He worked as an engineer but soon returned to school, earning a Ph.D. in business management from Georgia State University.

In the 1970s, the family moved to Richmond, Virginia, where George built a long and distinguished career as a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He founded the Virginia Family Small Business Forum, sponsored a scholarship in his name, and authored several management books. For decades, he was part of the fabric of Richmond, consulting with major corporations and the Governor's office, standing with Anita as she rose to Secretary of the Commonwealth, and winning a landmark reverse gender discrimination lawsuit against VCU.

George loved to travel, whether back to New York for Broadway shows or to San Francisco to cheer his beloved Giants. After retiring to Daytona Beach Shores, he and Anita sponsored the city's first pickleball courts at home and explored the globe abroad, once being chased by pirates off Somalia. George was a fighter, whether for his family and clients or debating the editors of the Richmond Times-Dispatch. He brought intensity to everything he did.

He is survived by his wife Anita; his children Lee (Irena) Rimler and Melanie (Gary) Susswein; grandchildren Mitchell, Max, Liora, and Nathan, who were the pride and most profound joy of his life, and sisters Marsha and Phyllis. We will miss him.

Being a Business major student at VCU, I had an immediate connection to Mr. RIMLER. I also graduated from Brooklyn Tech. He was influential in my life. My goal was to own a business. His teaching helped me to reach that goal. When I was enrolled in his class, he opened his home to me. Even allowing me and another classmate to come to the house and watch the hockey games. He had cable. He also told us to lock up when we left. I have shared this story many a time. He made a real impact on my life. I will never forget him. Class of 1980

Dearest Anita,
I can't imagine what you are going through. While we have lost contact for many years I have thought of you often. George was remarkable and he married a remarkable woman. I will always be grateful for your dedication to our campaigns. You brought me over two finish lines and I deeply regret that we could not make it over the third. You will be in my prayers during this most difficult time of your life. I would love to see you sometime but suspect that that will not happen until we both are on the other side. Love in the same God we both worship, Mary Sue

Dear Anita
I just finished reading George´s obituary. I am terribly sorry to learn of his passing. I was fortunate to work with/for George as an adjunct professor in the early 90´s. George was incredibly supportive and encouraging to me. I was early in my career and he took the time to build my confidence and help me develop skills. I believe he had an uncanny ability to look deeper into an individual to see their true abilities. We had long chats about our families. He was a proud father. Lee and Melanie were always top of mind in our conversations
He made a difference in my life and for that I am eternally grateful.
I wish the family well today in the the time to come

Dearest Anita: I am in Greece but heard the news about George this morning. I am so sad! I remember his sense of humor, his grit, and his passion for small business. I remember how much he loved you! Please know I am thinking of you and the family. He will never be forgotten! Love and hugs to you.
