Donald Adams Obituary

Donald Eugene Adams, 85, of Greenfield, Ohio, slipped the surly bonds of this world peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, on Feb. 1, 2026.

Don was born on January 4, 1941, in Ross County, Ohio, into a family of musicians that left an indelible mark on him and shaped his future. He was a devoted husband to the late Helen Raye Adams, his wife of 57 years, and a dedicated father to his beloved daughters: Kimberly A. Adams (Greenfield, Ohio), Kandi A. Adams (Canal Winchester, Ohio), Stephanie L. Roggero (Williamsburg, Virginia), Dee A. Shelton (Leesburg, Ohio), and Lee A. Brooks (Wilmington, Ohio).

While Don was known for his success in music, those close to him knew him for his kind, gentle, and generous nature. He was an extraordinary gentleman who lived an amazing life. He left home at age 20 for a life on the road with Johnny Paycheck and many others, a legacy that continued for over two decades. His travels took him across the globe and onto popular variety television programs such as Hee Haw, The Grand Ole Opry, The Jimmy Dean Show, and more. Don also achieved solo success, which solidified his presence in country music. In August 2022, Don received the Ohio Country Music Hall of Fame Award, and in February 2023, Don received the Founders of the Sound Award at the Ameripolitan Country Music Awards Ceremony.

His rigorous tour schedule meant days—and at times months—away from his family, and his heart ached more with each crossing of the Mississippi heading west.

Eventually, Don put down his microphone and bass to pursue what he called his greatest legacy: being a husband and father. He made a home in Greenfield, Ohio, and later enjoyed success as an entrepreneur.

Don's giving nature led him to headline many fundraisers for local causes as well as charity shows for Toys for Tots. It was his nature to give—through his voice, time, money, or sage advice—to anyone and everyone he could help. His charity knew no bounds.

The greatest joy of Don's life came from being a father, an extraordinarily devoted grandfather and a great-grandfather. He is survived by his grandchildren: Jesse B., Levi C., David B., Clint B., Luke S., Joshua B., Elissa B., Gatlin A., and Gavin A. His great-grandchildren—Jayce S., Jensen B., Jo B., Yuri H., Yrsa H., and Liam R.;—also brought special joy to his heart, two brothers, Darrell Adams and Farrell Adams. The more family that filled his home, the larger his heart grew, because his family was his world.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Catherine Adams; his sisters, Marcella Kay Adams, Sharon Coarine Adams, and Hester Elaine Adams; and his brothers—and sometimes co-conspirators—Howard Franklin Adams, Roland Edward Adams, Eldon Wayne Adams, and Gary Harlan Adams.

While Don had many friends and acquaintances, the Adams family especially thanks Ron and Sue Sexton, who demonstrated steadfast friendship throughout Don's life and especially in his later years. The family would also like to recognize Linda Wilson for her caregiving and support throughout Don's illness. Dad also cherished his brother-in-law and wife, Steve and Faye Marple.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Greenfield, 250 Lafayette St., Greenfield, Ohio, with visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and the service at 1:00 p.m. All are cordially invited to join in remembrance of Don.

Immediately following the service, friends and family are invited to gather at the Greenfield Eagles 1325, 1275 N. Washington St., Greenfield, Ohio.
