William James "Bill" Munsey

JONESVILLE, VA - William James "Bill" Munsey, 87, of Jonesville, Va., passed away June 19, 2025, after a brief illness. His wife of 61 years, Phyllis Ankney Munsey, was by his side when he was called Home by his Savior.

Bill was born March 28, 1938, and grew up in the Lower Wallens Creek (Horse Holler) community near Jonesville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and Eula Munsey, and his brother and best friend, Donald Munsey Sr. In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his son Ben Munsey and daughter Robin Munsey Robbins and husband Dave. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Bobby Ankney and his wife Jeannie. He is additionally survived by his sister Eunice Baker.

He is also survived by his three granddaughters, Leanna, Logan and Allison, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many, many friends.

Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and served his nation as a medic, and talked often of his stationing in Anchorage, Alaska. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jonesville, Fraternal Order of Masons, the Cedar Hill Country Club, and a devoted member of his community.

He was raised as a farmer, helping his family make a living off the land. He always talked about how farming gave him the pride and work ethic for the rest of his life.

Bill was a grocer, most recently owner and operator of West Town Supermarket in Jonesville. In retirement, he worked for the Lee County School Board ensuring that students received text books and other supplies to support their education.

In his spare time, he loved spending time with his wife, children and family, and taking care of their pet dogs, golfing, fishing, tinkering and yard sales.

In his life, he was called son, husband, dad, brother, Willie, Uncle Will, Will J., friend, family and most affectionately, Papa Bill. All of those aspects of Bill will be deeply missed for so many reasons.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, at Robinette Funeral Home in Jonesville. The funeral service with Masonic Rites will begin at 6:00 p.m. with Tracy McPherson officiating. Military honors will immediately follow outside the funeral home chapel.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 23, in the Marshall Cemetery on Lower Wallens Creek Road in Jonesville. Anyone who would like to travel in procession to the cemetery are asked to meet a the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

Pallbearers will be Ben Munsey, Richard Munsey, Ross Munsey, Richard Sizemore, Terry Clark, Charlie Gibbons and Steve Munsey. Honorary pallbearers will be David Robbins, Jeff Dye and Randy Crumley.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Preston Masonic Lodge #47, P.O. Box 469, Jonesville, VA.
