Vanda Nattress Obituary

Vanda Nattress

Vanda Nattress, 97, of Tamaqua, died on Sunday, May 11, 2025, in Hometown. She was the wife of the late Robert Nattress Sr., with whom she celebrated 46 years of marriage at the time of his death in 1994.

Born in Tamaqua, Vanda was the daughter of the late Raymond Morgans and Ellen (Brode) Morgans.

A 1945 graduate of Tamaqua High School and a 1948 graduate of the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing, she began her nursing career in Oklahoma with the United States Cadet Nursing Corps at the Talihina Indian Hospital of the Five Civilized Tribes.

Upon her return to the Tamaqua area, Vanda worked as a registered nurse at several local hospitals, including the Coaldale State General Hospital, and was pivotal in the continued early success of the local community blood drives. Vanda was chosen as the first R.N. to both develop and administer the Tamaqua Area Visiting Nurse Association (TAVNA) home health program and was seated on the board of directors until her retirement.

Her medical background extended into her personal life as she was always caring for someone in the family, the neighborhood, or the community.

A member of the First United Methodist Church in Tamaqua and a long-time Sunday school teacher, Vanda provided her family a spiritual foundation of faith and Sunday church attendance allowed for gathered fellowship and service for all church activities and outreach programs.

She is survived by a son, Robert Nattress, Jr., and his wife Lynn of Shavertown; a daughter, Judith Johnson of Tamaqua; six grandchildren, Heather Suggitt, Christopher Nattress, Brian Nattress Jr., Valerie Nattress, Alicia Himelright and her husband Brett Weaver, and Angela Purin; nine great-grandchildren, Skylar, Alexander, Audrey, Kendra, Lennon, Alexis, James Richard, Katie, James Robert; three nieces; and one nephew.

Vanda was predeceased by her husband, Robert Sr.; and two sons, Brian Nattress Sr., and Vaughn Nattress.

Services will be held at 11 AM on Friday, May 30, 2025, at Zizelmann-Gulla Funeral Home, 500 East Broad Street, Tamaqua with the Rev. Richard Clemson officiating. Call Friday from 10-11 AM at the funeral home. Interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Tamaqua will follow. Memorials in Vanda's name may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 124 W. Sorry to read of Vanda's passing. We both graduated from THS in 1945. Since her maiden name was Morgans and my last name is Morgan, and we were seated closely alphabetically in many classes, we were well acquainted. She was a very nice classmate. Of course I knew Bob Nattress as well. From her obituary it seems
like she had a very good life and was blessed with a lot of family.
