P. Maiya Obituary

Dr. P. Subraya Maiya, 90, of Fairfax, Virginia, and formerly of Darien, Illinois, passed away after a short illness on January 16, 2025. Born and raised on a family farm in the rural village of Parampalli, India, he was a gifted student who left India for the United States in 1959 to continue his education, earning a Master's degree from Columbia University and a PhD from Cornell University.
Known to most as Maiya, he became an award-winning materials scientist and spent the majority of his distinguished career at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Illinois.
After retiring in 2000, Maiya embraced a life filled with health, fitness, cooking, and creative pursuits. A talented writer, he turned his skills to crafting humorous and insightful articles in Kannada, his native language, contributing to Sangama magazine, a Kannada-language publication in the United States.
Maiya is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Nalini; their two sons, Arun (Lauren) Maiya and Madhu Maiya; and two beloved grandchildren, Rohan and Leela, who brought immense joy to his later years. His kindness, intellect, and wit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
