ST. PARIS – Byron Clayton "Barney" Carnes, 84 of St. Paris, passed away peacefully at his home.
He was born on June 21, 1941 in Champaign County, Ohio, the son of the late Henry and Annabelle (Parish) Carnes. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Barney served as a machinist and was a plank owner of the USS Kittyhawk.
In 1960, Barney married the love of his life, Marilyn Kay (Myers) Carnes, and together they built a life rooted in love, family, and community. He worked at Navistar before opening his own business, Barney's Auto Repair, which he successfully operated from 1974 until his retirement in 2004. Known for his mechanical skill and honesty, Barney was a trusted name throughout the St. Paris community.
He was a Master Technician who could fix anything, and his shop was a local staple for three decades. Barney was also a dedicated community supporter, generously giving to local organizations and always ready to lend a helping hand.
Barney had a wonderful sense of humor and a deep love for life. He enjoyed golfing – once achieving a hole-in-one – camping, working on classic and vintage cars, and meticulously mowing his lawn. Above all, he loved spending time with his family, never missing a moment, big or small.
He is survived by his sons, Tracy Carnes and Robert (Jennifer) Carnes; grandchildren, Morgan (Eric) Ferry, Layne Carnes, Bryan (Shania) Carnes, Terry Carnes, Carrie Carnes, Courtney Carnes, Trevor Carnes, and Rachel Carnes; great-grandchildren, Annabelle and Lincoln Ferry and Sutton Carnes; sister, Greta Black; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60-plus years, Marilyn Kay (Myers) Carnes; parents; son, Jeffrey Carnes; and brothers, Melvin (Ruth) Carnes, Fred (Helen) Carnes, and Richard Carnes.
