John Kangas Obituary

John Kangas

Pembroke, NH - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Kangas of Pembroke, who left us on July 5, 2025 at the age of 57, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. John was comfortable in his home, surrounded by loved ones at the time of his passing. He was a dedicated father and grandfather, a loving brother, and a cherished friend to many.

John was born in Hanover, NH on 11/29/1967 to parents Larry and Ann Kangas. He grew up in the town of Wilder, VT and graduated from Hartford High School, class of 1985. He quickly went into masonry work excelling in his skills over the years. He took immense pride in his work as a mason and enjoyed building things with his hands. His craftsmanship and dedication to his trade were evident in the beautiful structures he helped create. He found great satisfaction in his work, knowing that his efforts contributed to the community and left a lasting mark. He never shied from a short detour to show off his work to his children. John was the mason at St. Anslem College and cherished the small community of friends he had in the physical plant. He would not complete a job until it was done to perfection. He was a beloved member of the entire St. Anslem's community and formed genuine relationships with all who crossed paths with him.

John was a man of deep faith, maintaining a close connection to God throughout his life. His unwavering belief provided him with strength and comfort, especially during his illness. He was actively involved in his church, where he found joy and purpose in serving others and being part of a loving community. One of his fondest church traditions was working side by side with his daughter cooking and running the kitchen for the Christmas fair. He relished working with the youth ministry program and was actively involved and looked forward to taking students to the Steubenville retreat as well as preparing them for the sacrament of confirmation. He made a lasting impression with all the students he guided through faith formation. John was close to his Immaculate Heart of Mary family and received unending love and support from them.

As a father and grandfather, John was a source of endless love, wisdom, and support. He cherished every moment spent with his family, creating memories that will be treasured forever. John enjoyed being outdoors in all seasons, skiing, swimming, and camping. He also enjoyed music and concerts as well as coin collecting. He was immensely proud of his Finnish and Lithuanian heritage and tried to impart this history on to his children. The annual reading of the Better Butter Battle, while enjoying root beer floats, on the last day of summer ten hours before fall, was a favorite tradition that the family intends to continue. His legacy of kindness, generosity, and devotion will continue to inspire those who knew him.

John and Melanie Kangas raised 6 children and 4 grandchildren who were the center of his world. His daughter Justine Kangas and her fiancé Ryan Bregoli and their daughters Penelope and Mischa of Epsom, daughter Stephanie Quinlan and her husband Casimir and their daughter Ava of Leominster, MA, daughters Katherine, Miranda and Gabriella Kangas of Concord, and son Deven Mans and his family of Concord. He is also survived by his sister Laura Marzulli and her husband Dino and nephews Anthony and Chris Marzulli. John was predeceased by his parents, his brother James Kangas, and sister Teresa Kangas.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday July 10 from 4 to 7 pm at The Waters Funeral Home, 50 South Main St. Concord.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday July 11 at 10:30AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish 180 Loudon Rd. Concord.

Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Concord.

In lieu of sending flowers, donations can be made in John's memory to St. Mary of Providence, whose mission is to support individuals with developmental disabilities so that they can reach their highest potential in spiritual, emotional, and mental growth. The Sisters of St. Mary of Providence diligently and lovingly cared for John's sister Teresa. Donations can be made directly on their website at www.smopchicago.org.

He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

To The Kangas Family - Our deepest sympathies to you all. We are lifting you in our prayers during this time of loss. It was an honor to serve with John on the IHM Confirmation Team. Both of our children were blessed and inspired by his presence as their teacher. He had a HUGE generous heart and he will always be remembered for embracing everyone. He knew how to walk with the teenagers on their faith journey. He was light & love to us all! He will be greatly missed by the IHM faith community. We are grateful that our lives crossed paths. John - enjoy your eternal reward in Heaven for a life well lived in word and example! Peace & Love, Ann, Bill, Theresa, & Andrew Derry

Rich and I remember John so well from his high school days and his friendship with our son Lenny. When we moved to another town he came by and told us he was learning to be a mason. We had a well on our property that we didn´t use but could have. John volunteered to build up the surround to make it safe. He topped it with a little roof and cemented in a quarter for that year. He did a wonderful job and it and the quarter are still there. We always enjoyed seeing John and are so sorry to hear about his passing.

I am so sorry for the loss of John - such a special person and looking so much like his Mom. I knew him from infancy as I worked with Larry, his Dad, at Dartmouth Travel. My prayers are with your family.
