Susanna Smith Obituary

Susanna A. Smith

North Andover, MA - Susanna "Sue" Armstrong McClary Smith, born on April 13, 1936, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, after a long and fulfilling life. The youngest of three children to Mary-Martha Armstrong McClary and Andrew Bishop McClary, Sue was raised on the family farm in Windsor, Vermont where she developed a lifelong passion for nature, animals, and the arts alongside her sisters, Mary-Martha (Patsy) and Sally.

Sue enjoyed summers in Osterville, Massachusetts, and after graduating from Milton Academy and attending Smith College, she married Bayard "Butch" Smith in 1959. Together, they moved to Falmouth, Maine, where they raised a family and started a farm. Sue and Butch went on to have three children: Horace Prescott, Susanna "Bydie" Bayard (deceased), and Nathaniel "Bear" Armstrong. Sue is survived by her sons Prescott and Bear, their wives Sarah and Colleen, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

An expert horsewoman, Sue managed Gilnocky Farm, where she raised Connemaras, Hunters, and Jumpers. A generous patron of the arts, Sue founded and operated the "Merry Wives of Windsor" Art Gallery, supporting Vermont's local artists. A self-taught gardener, she had a remarkable talent for creating gardens that blended native plants, striking color schemes, and an endless succession of blooms. During her time at Edgewood, she generously shared her love of horticulture, inspiring others with her passion and creativity. A keen eye for horses, people, and opportunities, Sue's impeccable judgement was unparallelled.

Sue's passions extended to travel, especially to England and Africa, where she found great joy in walking trips, garden tours and her quest to see the Big Five. With an appreciation for good food, fine wine, and superb company, she cherished the moments spent with her close friends and family.

Sue's graciousness, generosity, and adventurous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A private memorial service will be held to honor her memory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Green Mountain Horse Association (GMHA) in Sue's memory.
