Gene DeGroote Obituary

Gene DeGroote, 81, of Dolan Springs, Arizona, passed away on February 21, 2025, at Sunrise Medical Center in Las Vegas from complications of a car accident.
Gene was born on April 11, 1943, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Gladys Lucy (Frerichs) DeGroote. He graduated from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1961. After high school he joined the United States Army and became a Green Beret. Gene was united in marriage to Frances Elfers on August 2, 1969, in Floyd, Iowa, and the couple later divorced.
Gene worked in a variety of fields including construction, insurance, and punched card programming. He later started his own water truck business and most recently delivered motorhomes, trailers, and trucks cross-country.
Gene loved the outdoors and quiet open spaces. He was an avid reader and always had a variety of projects, tinkering with vehicles and fixing things that were broken. He was kind, generous, and always willing to help a stranger.
Gene is survived by his children, Jamie (Andy) McCright of Rochester, Minnesota; Jason DeGroote of Vista, California; and Jessica (Cody) Meyer of Clarksville; six grandchildren, Michael, Aaron, and Megan McCright; Clara, Catherine, and Lucas Dow; his brothers and sisters, Jim (Gloria) DeGroote, Bill (Jennifer) DeGroote and Dorothy Schwab, all of Shell Rock; and Deb (Bill) Tjabring of Aplington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Dick DeGroote, a brother-in-law, Allen Schwab, and a granddaughter, Marissa McCright.
A memorial service will be held at 11?a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock with Pastor Joel Becker officiating. Burial of cremains will be held in Coster Cemetery, rural Shell Rock. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.
